If you mean before Archer Avenue,
People probably took the E, F of J trains to Sutphin, Parsons, 168 or 169 or 179 for the buses.
Before 1989 the buses mostly ran to subway stations on Jamaica and Hillside Avenue instead of to Archer.

For the LIRR they probably walked on Sutphin.
