The insides were usually even worse than the outsides.
This is your typical interior of the R10, R16, R27-30, R32, R38, R40, R42, and all the IRT class cars. Actually, usually they were even worse than this!







This C Train is typical of how I remember both the inside and outside of the R27-30's, and actually the stations too in the early 80's!



The R46's weren't exempt either, although by the mid 80's, they had it sort of under control for them:
