I hope they never reopen the new station. The loop was below the water table and the new station is below the loop. What kind of logic went into that decision? If they can reopen the loop at a minimal cost, fine. If not, then ferry passengers will either have to take the BMT at Whitehall (maybe with the W returning to service) or walk the short distance to Bowling Green. The cost to reopen sounds ridiculously high, and there is always the danger that another superstorm like Sandy will hit the area in the near future. As they taught us all when we learned to play poker, "Don't throw good money after bad". In other words, a bad decision was made to build the new station that far below the water table to begin with, so don't fix it up at a huge cost when it could happen again in short order. |

The station suffered water seepage from the day SFT opened with rust present on a walls. Do you really think the MTA would build anything with common sense in kind?If the West Side of Manhattan wasn't sloped, could you imagine the damage to the 7 line if another Sandy hit the region? |

Sometimes you have to over estimate the figure of the damage because they will only get a fraction of it. In my years of accounting work, we always ask for more than what we actually need. If I need $100, I ask for $125 and get $100....you get the point. |

I could swear I either recorded it, or somebody sent me a copy of it on DVD. Couldn't find it last night, so now not so sure. But I did see it twice and never gave waterproofing a thought either since the episode suggested that it was going to be one continuous "bathtub" that probably wouldn't have needed it. It was interesting seeing though how they had planned to dig under around and beside everything, digging under the park without digging UP the park and how deep down the rock cuts were for it.Typical method of waterproofing these days is to use sheets of PVC that are welded at the seams, In cut and cover excavations the PVC is attached to the shoring and the concrete is poured. The roof of the box is poured, the top of the sheets are folded over and welded to the sheets placed on the roof. In bored tunnels the PVC is attached to the outer lining then the inter lining is poured. The stuff that WMATA has built sense late 1980s has used this method of waterproofing. The way some of that under and around rock excavation was done seemed rather primitive to me. What I would have wrote could not been used as an i told you so. PVC has been widely used in electrical insulation on wires and other similar purposes. Problem with PVC is that it isn't a very stable compound and in a few short years, the "plasticizer" agent outgases causing it to dry out and shrink with resulting microcracks, then bigger cracks as it dries out. Then it begins absorbing moisture.PVC isn't such a great "plastic" for the purpose when it ages. |

It's almost 10% of your cable bill. Major reason for dropping television on this side. That and the CBS crap. Over the air looks MUCH better for the regular networks, so we do that. Add streaming, treats from the library, and a video server with almost 2000 movies on it and no need for any of that. Interesting, but given the bulk of those riders are from Staten Island going to and from the Ferry, I suspect the MTA may wind up under political pressure to re-open the old South Ferry station as quickly as possible to appease those who are too lazy, have difficulty (for any reason) or otherwise don't want to walk from Rector to the Ferry Terminal and vice versa (also applies to Whitehall, Bowling Green, etc.). |

I would think in this instance they would be able to get a waiver given the extreme circumstances that were involved (i.e.: A natural disaster). Especially if the old loop station has to be put back in service for two years or more as the (1) terminal due to the current station being unusable, I would also do the necessary ADA work while the station is open because that would also allow for a later re-working of the station for the Lexington line that was described previously. That said, anyone who would cry foul over the MTA getting an ADA waiver to re-open old SF immediately for revenue service would be missing the reason it would be done: Hurricane Sandy effectively destroying the station that replaced it. This clearly would be an emergency circumstance. The other option would be to see if it is more feasible (and cheaper) to simply extend the old station on each end enough to allow for 10 cars and do a full renovation of the old station, making it ADA accesible and abandoning the current station. |

Certainly!! The (7) probably would be vunerable were it not for the way the west side is sloped. What I now think needs to be looked at is the possibility of renovating the old loop station and if possible extending it so full, 10-car trains can use it. As it is, I believe you actually could fit seven cars into old SF if you did it right, so such an extension might actually only be needed to be around 160-180' as opposed to the 250' or so it might be otherwise (anyone with the actual dimensions please feel free to correct me on this). It may be cheaper to simply re-do and expand the old station that try to rebuild the new one. Then there is the matter of the old inner station. With tbe new technology trains coming in the years ahead and that station actually able to handle full 10-car trains I believe, perhaps that station could be re-opened since I'm sure the newer cars as they come onto the subways could be programmed to ONLY open the center doors at the inner SF station if that station got revived in the future. While I have never thought of bringing back the inner loop station previously, it could be feasible to do so down the road if NTT cars that are coming can be programmed to automatically only open the center doors at the inner SF loop station. |

If there is anything that most Staten Islanders are already accustomed to is South Ferry being closed for a variety of reasons even back in the loop days. From my observations it's a 7-8 minute walk and using any other alternative besides taking the 2/3 to Wall Street would be slower than walking and using Rector.I also remember seeing a picture showing Whitehall terminal flooded out meaning that if SF loop were open and the entrance was still there by the water, South Ferry loop if not boarded up properly would have been flooded and damaged pretty badly as well but not nearly as costly as the new SF. |

Seawater is hell and corruption on all things mechanical. In my early years with EMS, I remember the city playing with an amphibious rescue craft called a LARC, which could be driven on city streets and sailed in the water like any ship. But for every hour in the water, some poor guy had four hours of cleaning out the saltwater gunk from every working part of the boat meant for use on land.Unlike fresh water, which dries out with mo real effect, seawater gets in there and stays there, much to the chagrin of those who operate subways here. |

Epix will piss you off. They have the little mini ads at the bottom of the screen just like what the network channels do now. I mean what's the point of the premiums other than unedited and uninterrupted movie? May as well just rent or buy the movie and cut the middle man. once my fios 2 yr deal is up, I'm dropping the premiums. I will say that Max is probably the best in terms of just showing the logo and minimum intrusions, as they won't put the promos during the movie. Although it might change since they've started getting in on the series stuff that all the other premiums have done. |

Well, if you do not think NYCT has enough subway cars now, then just wait until the open the 2nd Ave Line.LION on Second Avenue: [Q] BROADWAY EXPRESS 125th Street to Coney Island via Bridge / Brighton Line (24/7) [N] BROADWAY EXPRESS 125th Street to Coney Island via Bridge / Sea Beach Line (16/5) [R] BROADWAY LOCAL Astoria to Fort Hamilton via Tunnel (24/7) [W] BROADWAY LOCAL Forest Hills to Whitehall Street (16/5) Selected (W) trains will short turn at City Hall. Selected (W) trains will turn at 9th Avenue YES, the LION knows where they yard are in relation to the [RR] train, and the heck with it! If I do not stop the trains, I'll not have to service them! Of course they will be serviced by the JAMAICA YARD, and yes they will have to dead head in and out, but this is how it will be done. EXPRESS TRAINS via 63rd Street and the Bridge and LOCAL TRAINS via 60th Street and the Tunnel. |

With some short-turn creativity, they can scrape up something.Do all 15 F's per hour have to run reverse peak on the Culver Line ? After 730am, turn half of them back at 2nd Avenue for another load from Queens. By the time they now get to KH or CI, they are not needed for service. Ditto in the PM. |

You may be right about that. If it weren't for the problems with the R44s or if they hadn't reefed well over half the R32 fleet, there would would have been enough cars for reinstating the W, if the MTA were to consider it...although I doubt they will. |

What would be the consequences of not fixing the station and just continuing to terminate the 1 at Rector and reverse trains on the old South Ferry loop? Granted, the MTA would likely only receive that Federal money for the express purpose of rebuilding the station. But if it's going to cost more to rebuild the station than it did to build it in the first place, and there are nearby stations (Bowling Green and Whitehall), then is South Ferry really worth rebuilding? |

While speaking of the old cars, why did they reef the R40Ms? Imo they looked a lot better than the R42s. R38s were also 'ok'. If those were around you could run those together with the R32s and there won't be this issue every time the C needs to run 8 car R42s if there's a shortage of R32s available. |

A lot of the R38's roofs were really shot.Hypothetically, could they have just kept the best performing pairs, regardless of type? A reliable smorgasbord train is better than an unreliable one-type train. |
