That's what draws me into it ... the city's politics has always been interesting when things go sideways. Sorta like Chicago, but very different. And projects die all the time - look at SAS. But the city was always meticulous in its paperwork and could come up with the most fanciful justifications for why every stupid thing ever done was pure genius. One would have expected THIS episode to have resulted in "unanticipated problems which would have made further construction wreckless and impractical" laying out dozens of good reasons why this was a good thing to just stop.

Nothing ... THAT makes it interesting. :)

IMHO there's a tunnel (with no tracks) that extends until it ends at 78th St. and Pitkin Ave. In addition, there's an unfinished station that's partially tiled at 76th St. and Pitkin ave. The yard leads make it to the main tunnel.

Well, I was actually referring to the signals in the trackways on A7 and A8 which protected the switches which were removed that connected those tracks to K5 and K6 leads. As for the single homeball facing the wall, I believe that was intended to be part of the 76 St interlocking and wouldn't be needed for Euclid to function. The Automatic approach on A2 is a different story but even that could have been removed since the button controlling that signal had long been removed from Euclid's model board.

I don't know if any photos exist of the station entrance s at either 59 or 36 St which had a similar station entrance in the median of 4 Av. Somewhere years ago, I read some documentation that mentioned that the station entrances in the median at the express stations on 4 Av were removed and placed on the sidewalks due to being a traffic hazard. I got the impression that Pacific St might also have had a similar entrance in the median. Interestingly, the 96/Bway station on the IRT had a headhouse built on a modified median in the middle of Broadway to make station access easier. I guess something like that is not as much of a traffic hazard in 21 century Manhattan as it was in 20 century Brooklyn.

Yes, that's the whole thing - it's an interesting topic, and there is enough circumstantial evidence to suggest their "could" be something there, but there's no proof to actually prove it, but because of that circumstantial evidence, there's also no conrete way to disprove it either. It's an anomaly.

Shouldn't there be paperwork from the time when the cinder block wall was put up? You'd think that there would have to be a contract to order cinder blocks and also some sort of assignment to whomever erected the wall.

There should be paperwork for each and every move there ... for the builds, for the stop work, for the inventory of what was used and what was surplused or moved to other construction, justifications for the work, justifications for the stop work, storage documents during the war, disposal of materials, you name it.

For every action, there is a form to be filled and filed.

Paperwork is what makes the city run run run lol. In fact I can say that I am sure that they had to be internally audited by the cities finest Auditor year by year. So wonder if any of the City Auditor's records are still around to account for all of these expenditure,s. Walls, track removal, back fill maybe, Someone had to account for some of the realities .

Precisely ... at the state level, agencies usually get rid of their paperwork after 5 to 7 years depending, but every single sheet goes off to the state archives. Having had to go try to find stuff at the state archives when I was with the state, it's absolutely no picnic at all - the usual response from the archivists being, "it's over in there ... somewhere. Good luck." Only those willing to shuffle through LOTS of cartons might find what they're looking for.

I can only imagine what a mess the city's archives are. :(

Your right. I use to work for the government in downtown brooklyn years back and it was the same thing. audits every year, boxing up the documents and sending them over to 3rd ave warehouse and in time filmed. lol.

I was posting with a guy named Marc a few days ago. He was responding to my comments about looking for building plans for the school out on Pitkin, PS 24. Have to say Marc was very informitive and detailed on how much research had to be done to try and get answers. Some thoughts were to see though building department records, right away, utilities, etc if any records existed to show the existance of a subway tunnel in this area. but when dealing with old records or lack of records you can still come up short. who knows one day we may get to the truth of the matter.

If the one you are talking about is the one that protected the switched from A7 and A8, then there is no reason for it to be hooked up to the Pitkin yard machine for any reason since neither the switches nor the tracks are there anymore. It sounds like we are getting confused between the yard leads and the mainline subway under Pitkin Av.
