I was at 77th Street recently and took note of the concave subway wall and bricked up niches, as 86th Street, that represents the N/B express track (Track 4) on a section of platform that is physical in area of the 1969 extension located on the N/B S/E of the station. Clearly allot of digging went on for something that was not needed at the time.

Station extensions are also easily identified by low horizontal I beams that underpin vertical wall soldier columns spaced typically five feet apart, and then again underpinned by vertical I beam columns spaced about fifteen feet apart. Construction is typically rolled single piece steel I beams (IND style), as opposed to a rivet assembled I Beam common to most IRT & BMT tunnel construction.

As an off topic aside. The original 4th Avenue subway station stairway to the street above at the 59th Street station were originally located in the middle of 4th Avenue based on observations of an area now used as a communications room.

The present fare control area on the 60th street end of the station was enlarged when the now present stairwells were built onto the sidewalks. Does anyone have photos taken of 4th Avenue at that vicinity that date from around 1915 showing a station entrance, and a narrower 4th Avenue roadway?
