The overall emissions of a modern diesel locomotive is much cleaner than the old FL-9s that ran there years ago & the cost of fuels that run electric plants to power the third rail overall is much higher now v/s then. Its just a bottom line thing. Electricity more expensive than diesel? I don't know the numbers here, but every comparison I've seen between electric vehicles and fossil fuel powered ones is slanted heavily in favor of electrics. Electrics also have the advantage of being able to make use of sustainable fuel sources. There's also the issue of performance: multiple units perform better when stops are spaced closer together. I'm sure that there's a reason Caltrain is planning to electrify. |
