Last sold, Jan, 2008 so we can presume that it's a foreclosure. It is conveniently located in the heart of gang activity country but it's only a 5 minute run to the train station. The school district also is not the best. |

They're the ACLU, not (for example) the American Property Rights Union. Other organizations fight for property rights that Americans have under the Constitution. Still other organizations fight for the right to bear arms, etc., etc. |

So whatever they decide is a civil liberty is a civil liberty and whatever else is in the Constitution that they don't like is not.Great argument. I left the ACLU (yes, I was a "card carrying" member) over Skokie. I remember the popular line was "I may hate what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." In Skokie, I realized that a Nazi group where death is an actual part of their culture may have a Constitutional right to do something, but I will not defend them "to the death" or with my money or the implied assent of my membership in the ACLU. Does the ACLU care that I (and many other) left. Probably not. But neither do I care whether they care. |

So whatever they decide is a civil liberty is a civil liberty and whatever else is in the Constitution that they don't like is not.No, what they decide doesn't matter. They have to convince the Supreme Court for it to matter. Just like the NRA and gun issues, or property rights groups and their issues. |

They can and do choose which issues to go to bat for and which not. It is not a level playing field. They seem to especially like issues where there is a question of social disruption or behalf of the social disrupters. The instant issue at the start of the thread is the ability of gangs to assemble in public places that they essentially take over. The right of the assembly of these people is their concern. The right of assembly of others who might want to use the space, to walk together, to play basketball in a public court, to assemble in a schoolyard is of no interest to the ACLU unless it is the government trying to prevent the assembly. To paraphrase Jeane Kirkpatrick, the ACLU worries you rights will be hindered by the government, but if a gang does worse, its none of their business. |

I am of the opinion that people abrogate their right to free assembly when that assembly is for the sole purpose (or just in part) is to promote or engage in criminal or anti-social behavior. Gang activity certainly falls into that category. I would be very disappointed if the ACLU interceded on the behalf of the gang members. I would be disappointed but not surprised. |

I didn't really care for them until photography became an issue. That was a HUGE wakeup call.I joined them specifically because of that issue - they are the only organization that is suing the federal and local governments and agencies over it. If it were not for the ACLU the government would be running rampant enforcing de-facto photo bans (as opposed to de-jure) with virtually no opposition. I intend to remain a member even if we ultimately prevail in the war against photography. I will tolerate their stands on issues I disagree with them on because without them we would lose all of our freedoms |

I wonder if the ACLU would care as much about photographer's rights if there wasn't a national security concern involved. You know a group can be on the right side of an issue for the wrong reason. Or to put it another way, railfan's rights may be "going along for the ride" of a different issue. And saying "without them we would lose all of our freedoms" is a rhetorical overreach and a faith-based perception. |
