They can and do choose which issues to go to bat for and which not. It is not a level playing field. They seem to especially like issues where there is a question of social disruption or behalf of the social disrupters.

The instant issue at the start of the thread is the ability of gangs to assemble in public places that they essentially take over. The right of the assembly of these people is their concern. The right of assembly of others who might want to use the space, to walk together, to play basketball in a public court, to assemble in a schoolyard is of no interest to the ACLU unless it is the government trying to prevent the assembly.

To paraphrase Jeane Kirkpatrick, the ACLU worries you rights will be hindered by the government, but if a gang does worse, its none of their business.
