One of these two teams will win their first ever World Cup. Holland has been powering through this tournament without dropping a single game, while Spain has made its way to the final in much less dominating fashion than they did in Euro 2008.

That sounds about right. This is the soccer equivalent of the Red Sox (pre 2004) vs. Cubs. These are both teams of destiny.

Holland twice coming so close while Spain was the eternal choker (this was only their second ever Final Four berth) even when having great teams.
I had predicted Germany beating Spain but the Octopus has spoken and I am no match compared to the Octopus.

Germany will take Uruguay in the 3rd place match.

Other curiosities:

The World Cup Final: a game of firsts
By Ryan Bailey

The 2010 World Cup Final will be a groundbreaking game in more ways than one. What's that? You want to know exactly how many ways it will be groundbreaking? You got it — here's why Sunday's match at Soccer City, above, will see a number of firsts...

1. This year's final will be the first time a team from Europe wins the tournament outside of Europe. Only Brazil and Argentina have won away from their home continent.

2. This is the first final that will not feature one of Argentina, Brazil, Germany or Italy.

3. It will be Spain's first time in the final. Their best performance so far is fourth place in the 1950 edition, and this tournament is the first since then that they have even reached the semifinals.

4. This could be the Netherlands' first World Cup victory, if they overcome David Villa et al. They've been losing finalists twice.

5. If you followed the two previous points closely enough, you will see that World Cup 2010 will definitely see a first-time winner.

6. Additionally, it's also the first time the Netherlands will not face the host nation in the final. In 1974 they lost 2-1 to West Germany in Munich, and in 1978 they succumbed to Argentina 3-1 in Buenos Aires.

7. The game will also be the first time either manager has won anything on the international stage. Bert van Marwijk has won the UEFA Cup and the Dutch version of the FA Cup with Feyenoord, and Vicente del Bosque won the Champions League, La Liga, the Supercopa de Espana, the UEFA Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup with Real Madrid.

8. It's the first time a psychic octopus has shaped the outcome of the final. If Germany had managed to prevail over the Spanish, this would also have been the first time a mollusk would have had the chance to reveal the outcome of a final before it took place.

9. The final will be the first game in this tournament that Fernando Torres maybe thinks about possibly scoring a goal. If he plays, that is.

10. And finally, the final will give you your first chance to talk about something other then LeBron this week.

NASA piles on the Jabulani hate
By Richard Whittall

"Appalling."

"The guy who designed this ball never played football."

"The worst ball that I have seen in my life."

So says everyone from Iker Casillas to Robinho to Fabio Capello. Former Liverpool striker Craig Johnson even wrote a passionate 12-page letter to Sepp Blatter, president of FIFA, on how the Adidas ball "could ruin the game as we know it." Trashing the Jabulani has become something of a sport in its own right, with wildly mishit shots celebrated with resounding cries of "Jabulani!" in pubs and living rooms around the globe.

Now it turns out there is a very real scientific basis for all the moaning. NASA's aerodynamics people at the Ames Investigation Centre managed to get some MLS players to kick a very dusty Jabulani around to what sounds like a soundtrack from a 1970s instructional video. The tests confirm what everyone has been saying: Jabulani's scanty 440-gram weight, coupled with the high-altitude conditions in South Africa, means when at speeds of 44 mph or more the ball becomes susceptible to something called the "knuckle effect." That's aerodynamic shorthand for "it swerves all around like crazy at high speeds because of the air flow on the seams and stuff," which isn't so bad when you get goals like this.

Adidas has yet to respond to the new scientifically based criticisms, and Sepp Blatter and FIFA are meeting in September to discuss the horrible aftermath left in Jabulani's zig-zagging wake. What's really frightening though is that we now know World Cup footballers are apparently as adept at noting erratic aerodynamic patterns as NASA's rocket scientists. Be afraid.

Soccer fans are very upscale compared to most major sports in the US.

I'd describe tonight's MMA crowd as somewhere between arena football and NHL.

That's why soccer will survive this time. Sponsors like the audience and will pay to be a part of it.

The explosive, quick strike attacks and deft finishing touch is something to behold. Whoever compared soccer to trench warfare in The Great War is simply ignorant... that or a liar. I'm at the edge of my seat and as soon as someone scores I plan to get tickets for the MLS East All Stars v. Chivas San Jose Junior Bocas game next month at that little stadium in Harrison. The mascara I mean face paint I put on the moment I awoke this morning ran down my face but I make no apology for it. To have witnessed this extraordinary achievement by Spain was both a distinct honor and singular priviledge that I shall hold dear and consider sacred for the rest of my years. As for 9 local and anybody else who supported The Netherlands, I feel your pain but you need to let it go. Think of it this way - if the Dutch or the Netherlands or Holland or whatever they are had scored instead of Spain then the Dutch or the Netherlands or Holland would have won. Besides, there's always next year... actually, I guess not.

I agree. World Cup finals often suck. Other big games like the Super Bowl often share the same fate. The players are nervous and are more afraid to lose than risking to win. The 3rd place game OTOH is almost always entertaining for the very opposite reason.
Spain took more risks and deserved it. Paul the Octupus went 8 for 8. Unbelievable!

They should do like the Americas Cup and keep the tournament in the country of the defending champion.

That would bring serious organizational issues. For most of their history, places like Brazil and Argentina did not have the financial resources or political stability to pull off such a thing.

The America's Cup only needs one good city with one good marina. Also global interest (with travelling fans, media etc) is limited for that.

lol. I wish!

I was just talking to my son today about when we might compete for a WC championship and I said that barring something changing rapidly that it would be a while. Our absolute best player of all time - Landon Donovan - probably wouldn't rank in the top 30 players in this years WC. We lost to Ghana who was missing their best player by far - Michael Essien. He would probably be in the top 10. Ghana has a much more realistic chance to win in 2014 than us and they have no chance at all.

My conclusions:

The best team won. FIFA needs to add instant replay on goal line situations and offsides and Diego Forlan of Uruguay was the MVP of the tournament.
The USA's performance was a glass half-full. We met our minimum goal of advancing out of group (finishing FIRST), were fun to watch but missed an historic opportunity.

I think South Africa did a surprisingly good job at running the WC. It makes me wonder if someplace like Cape Town can one day host the Olympics.

South America's teams can't hold a candle to the European ones while African ones (except Ghana) were a massive disappointment.

France and Italy will rebuild from their debacles and be back in the mix in the near future. Diego Maradona should never be allowed anywhere near a soccer pitch ever again.

ESPN/ABC coverage and analysis was very good though there is still room to improve.

All in all, except for the first week and the vuvuzelas and the crazy Jubilani ball, it was a very fun WC and I look foward to the next one.

Here's hoping that the US wins the bid for 2022.

Maybe Freddy Adu and Jozy can step it up. We shall see. We need a new coach though. Bob Bradley has reached his limits.

Freddy Adu

Not a chance. I haven't seen him play in a couple of years, but he was vastly over hyped from what I saw. He's too little, too weak, not especially fast, and has US class skills, not world class.

Jozy maybe. He's already strong and will be stronger by then. But we need both quality and depth. We'll see what the MLS puts out in the next year or so, but unless we get some phenoms over to Europe soon, I don't see a bright future.

Uganda bombings kill 23, World Cup fans targeted

By Elias Biryabarema

KAMPALA — Bomb blasts ripped through two separate bars packed with soccer fans watching the World Cup final in Uganda's capital Kampala, killing at least 23 people and signaling a possible link to Somali Islamists.

One American was among those killed in the bombings on Sunday and U.S. President Barack Obama, condemning what he called deplorable and cowardly attacks, said Washington was ready to help Uganda in hunting down those responsible.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombings. Al Qaeda-inspired al Shabaab militants in Somalia have threatened to attack Uganda for sending peacekeeping troops to the anarchic country to prop up the Western-backed government.

One bombing targeted the Ethiopian Village restaurant in the Kabalagala district, a popular night-life spot which was heaving with soccer fans and is popular with foreign visitors. The second attack struck a rugby club showing the match.

Twin coordinated attacks have been a hallmark of al Qaeda and groups linked to Osama bin Laden's militant network.

"The information we have indicates 13 people have died here at the Ethiopian Village and many others are injured and more than 10 people are reported to have died at the rugby club," Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura told reporters.

Reveling one minute in the closing moments of the final between Spain and Netherlands, the bombings left shocked survivors standing among corpses and scattered chairs.

"We were watching soccer here and then when there were three minutes to the end of the match an explosion came ... and it was so loud," witness Juma Seiko said at the Kampala Rugby Club.

Heavily armed police cordoned off both blast sites and searched the areas with sniffer dogs while dazed survivors helped pull the wounded away from the wreckage.

Police said it was possible those behind the attacks on the Ethiopian Village and the rugby club were targeting foreigners.

Ethiopian troops invaded Somalia in 2006 to oust an Islamist movement from Mogadishu. That sparked the Islamist insurgency which still rages.

The U.S. embassy in Kampala said one American was killed in the bomb blasts. It was not immediately known if any other foreigners were among the casualties.
"EVIL-MINDED CHARACTERS"
Uganda, east Africa's third largest economy, is attracting billions of dollars of foreign investment, especially in its oil sector and government debt markets, after two decades of relative stability.

But investors in Uganda and neighboring Kenya, which shares a largely porous border with Somalia, often cite the threat from Islamic militants as a serious concern.

"The information we have indicates the people who have attacked the Ethiopian Village were probably targeting expatriates," Kayihura said.

"We have evil-minded characters who have been warning us, like the ADF (Allied Democratic Forces), al Shabaab and the Lord's Resistance Army."

The Lord's Resistance Army waged a two-decade war in northern Uganda before crossing into Sudan and further afield into central Africa. In May, Uganda said ADF rebels could be regrouping along the western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In Washington, U.S. National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer said Obama was "deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from these deplorable and cowardly attacks."

"The United States is ready to provide any assistance requested by the Ugandan government," said Hammer.

A senior U.S. administration official said: "We are in contact with our embassy in Kampala and in touch with the FBI regarding government of Uganda requests for assistance."

On Saturday, Somali President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed told Reuters he was worried by the growing number of foreign jihadists joining the ranks of Islamic insurgents and said they posed a growing threat to regional security.

Regional allies are preparing to send an extra 2,000 peacekeepers to Somalia, bringing the total number of African Union troops to around 8,100. Al Shabaab responded by urging Muslims to join a jihad and pledged to attack before being attacked.

Uganda bombs kill 74, Islamists claim attack

By Elias Biryabarema

KAMPALA — Somali Islamists said on Monday they had carried out two bomb attacks in Uganda that killed 74 soccer fans watching the World Cup final on television.

The explosions in the closing moments of Sunday's match ripped through a crowded restaurant and a rugby club in the capital Kampala.

Al Shabaab militants in anarchic Somalia had already threatened to attack Uganda for sending peacekeeping troops to prop up its fragile, Western-backed government.

In Mogadishu, the group threatened more attacks unless Uganda and Burundi withdrew their peacekeepers.

"Al Shabaab was behind the two bomb blasts in Uganda," spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage told reporters.

"We are sending a message to Uganda and Burundi: If they do not take out their AMISOM troops from Somalia, blasts will continue, and it will happen in Bujumbura too."

Al Shabaab is fighting the Somali government and claims links with al Qaeda.

"At one of the scenes, investigators identified a severed head of a Somali national, which we suspect could have been a suicide bomber," said army spokesman Felix Kulayigye. "We suspect it's al Shabaab because they've been promising this."

Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura said some arrests had been made, but gave no details. He said police had begun reviewing security in public places.

Burundi, which also contributes troops to the peacekeeping mission, stepped up security, said an army spokesman in the capital, Bujumbura.

The dead included one American. President Barack Obama condemned what he called cowardly attacks, and the White House said the Federal Bureau of Investigation would help in the investigation.

One bomb targeted the Ethiopian Village restaurant, a popular night-spot that was heaving with soccer fans and is frequented by foreign visitors. The second attack struck the Lugogo Rugby Club, which was also showing the match.

Coordinated attacks have been a hallmark of al Qaeda and groups linked to Osama bin Laden's militant network.

Among the dead were at least 60 Ugandans, an Irish woman, and 11 Ethiopians and Eritreans. Two had not been identified.

The U.S. State Department said one American citizen was killed and five injured. The U.S. charity Invisible Children said one of its members, Nate Henn from Wilmington, Delaware, had been killed in the rugby club blast.
'COWARDLY ACT'
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni visited the rugby club.

"This shows you the criminality and terrorism that I have been talking about," he said. "If you want to fight, go and look for soldiers, don't bomb people watching football."

Bereket Simon, the Ethiopian government's head of information, called the attacks a "cowardly act by al Shabaab terrorists."

Ethiopian troops invaded Somalia in 2006 to oust an Islamist movement. That sparked the Islamist insurgency that rages today.

The blasts came near the end of the match and left shocked survivors reeling among corpses and scattered chairs.

"We were watching soccer here and then, when there were three minutes to the end of the match, an explosion came ... and it was so loud," witness Juma Seiko said at the rugby club.

Heavily armed police cordoned off both blast sites and searched the areas with sniffer dogs while dazed survivors helped to pull the wounded from the wreckage.

Uganda, east Africa's third largest economy, is attracting billions of dollars of foreign investment, especially in its oil sector and government debt markets.

But investors in Uganda and neighboring Kenya, which shares a porous border with Somalia, often say the threat from Islamic militants is a serious concern.

"I certainly think the blasts will make risk appraisals tighter on Uganda. If it does transpire to be al Shabaab, that will certainly raise the concerns of Western investors and also Chinese investors in Uganda," said Alex Vines, Head of Africa Programmes at London's Chatham House think-tank.

The Ugandan shilling fell slightly against the dollar on Monday.

Somali residents of Kampala said they feared a backlash.

"We are in fear and locked in our homes today," said Bisharo Abdi, a Somali refugee. "Some Ugandans are saying 'Kill Somalis'."

On Saturday, Somali President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed told Reuters the growing number of foreigners joining the Islamic insurgents posed a threat to regional security.

Psychic Paul the Octopus has died; How soon can we expect a movie of his life?

by Catherine Fuentes
Oct 26 2010 06:05 PM ET

This morning I heard some very sad news that I couldn’t bring my sea creature-loving self to believe. My favorite animal of the summer, Paul the Octopus, has died at the ripe old age of 2-and-a-half. Steffan Porwoll, a manager at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre in Germany where Paul lived and made his famous predictions, said that “[Paul] appears to passed away peacefully during the night, of natural causes,” which should let all fans of Pulpo Paul find some comfort in his untimely passing. Of course, this has only proven to be excellent fodder for conspiracy theorists — and a certain filmmaker is speculating other reasons behind his death.

Jiang Xiao, a Chinese filmmaker, spent the summer in South Africa to film a “comic suspense” film under the title “The Legend of World Cup,” until she, like so many of us, was taken by Paul’s accurate predictions. Instead of making a film about the World Cup, Jiang chose to just focus on Paul’s predictions, renaming her film “Kill Paul Octopus.” Being the sole filmmaker documenting Paul’s psychic abilities, her expertise on his life is being called upon following his death. Jiang told the Guardian that she was “60 to 70 percent sure that Paul had died on July 9th and the Germans have been covering up his death and fooling us for a long time.” She declined to explain why she believes that Paul died in July — all her Paul-related beliefs will be revealed in her movie, naturally — but instead points to how easy it would be for the public to be duped by Paul’s death and subsequent cover up. “[Octopuses] all look the same. It is impossible to tell the difference.” As true as that may be, I don’t want to believe that an imposter Paul made the World Cup final prediction — or that his aquarium would do something like that.

For those Paul lovers hoping to commemorate his death, a condolence section has been set up on his Facebook page, and the Sea Life Centre will be honoring his life with a burial plot and modest permanent shrine on their grounds. Porwoll acknowledges that this might seem a bit much, but pointed out, “Paul achieved such popularity during his short life that it may be deemed the most appropriate course of action.” And for all sports gamblers dependent on Paul’s picks, fret not, apparently there is another octopus waiting in the wings, hoping to have as much success in picking sports winners. His name, of course, is Paul.

PopWatchers, will you be watching Jiang Xiao’s movie if it ever gets released? Do you think the world will ever experience the “psychic abilities” of another animal?

Some sources say that you can keep an octopus alive for between four to six years in captivity, so anything's possible.

As for calamari, you'll have lots of chefs saying "that's squid". I've only been aware of the term "pulpo" for cooked octopus myself. All octopodes are venomous, too; some squid are, and all cuttlefish are.
