The problem is that they drone on for the entire match at a level that has been described as ranging from annoying to painful. The crowd noise is way over 100 dB. I've heard almost 130 dB which is about as loud as we would ever hear anywhere.

Indeed. In the World Cup these guys are playing for COUNTRY and not for wealthy clubs where the rich players are mercenaries and can be from anywhere. That's for the other 47 months. It's why I watch hockey at the Olympics but not the NHL.
It's greatly satisfying to see some tiny country like Slovenia or some poor place like Ghana make it there. Even the dreaded North Koreans are a Cinderella story.

The problem as I understand it is that they have a good defense and don't make a lot of mistakes. Potentially they can hold of our admittedly less than world class attack and then counter attack with little risk. Maybe we should play for the tie and then beat Algeria?

We should play for a win and be satisfied with a tie. England will beat Algeria in their second game. If we tie Slovenia, the standings will be

1. Eng - 4 points
2. SLO - 4 points
3. USA - 2 points
4. ALG - 0

going into the last match. Us beating Algeria and ENG and SLOV tying would leave everybody at 5 points and then it would come down to goal differential. I'd rather we go into the Algeria game needing just a tie instead of a must-win situation and looking at the scoreboard to see how the other game is going. Fortunately, Slovenia only beat Algeria 1-0 so not much of a goal differential to make up if it comes to that.

WC is only every four years for a month and national honor rests on the results.
English national pride was wounded on Saturday. Ours was greatly enhanced.

But the thing is, most Americans dont care whether we win or lose in soccer. It may be a source of national pride in other countries, but it most certainly is not here, as most Americans don't care either way.

Tennis is an individual sport. Its cool when the Williams sisters or an Andy Roddick win but they are pretty much representing themselves and not their country. The soccer equivalent is an American player doing well with his club in England (or elsewhere) or in European club play (like Clint Dempsey did last season with Fulham for example).
It's good to see an American doing well but it's not for the National Team.
on that note, Americans Jose Torres and Hercules Gomez will be playing for Pachuca in the Club World Cup in December.

World Cup officials: Women were dressed to shill
By NANCY ARMOUR, AP National Writer

JOHANNESBURG (AP)—More than 30 women showed up at the Netherlands-Denmark match wearing orange mini-dresses emblazoned with the name of a Dutch brewery— earning them a red card from World Cup officials who acted to quash what they called an ambush marketing scam.

Over thirty women were ejected from the Netherlands-Denmark match for 'ambush marketing,' each wearing a dress supporting a Dutch brewery. The stunt may have irked FIFA, soccer’s governing body. But it got Dutch brewer Bavaria NV exactly what it wanted.

“That’s the free publicity they were looking for,” said John Sweeney, head of advertising at the University of North Carolina’s school of journalism and mass communications. “But (for FIFA), there’s paranoia about ambush marketing. Sponsors pay a lot of money, and are demanding exclusivity.

“It’s two colliding things in a chess game.”

Companies such as Budweiser pay millions to have their names attached to the World Cup, and FIFA has plenty of incentive to protect its sponsors—almost $300 million worth. According to FIFA’s 2009 financial report, 97 percent of the federation’s $1.06 billion in revenues came from TV and marketing rights, with sponsorship deals providing $277 million.

But the sponsorships don’t pack the same punch if two or three companies can claim to be the “official (fill-in-the-blank) provider of the World Cup,” which is why FIFA goes to great lengths to protect their exclusivity. Only official partners are allowed to use the World Cup for advertising and promotion campaigns.

In ambush marketing, non-sponsors try to sneak their logos or associate their brand names with a major sports event to reap free advertising. Imagine a pack of Bud Girls showing up at an event where Miller was the official beer sponsor.

So organizers of events like the Olympics or the World Cup employ staff to make sure that non-sponsors or their logos are kept out of sporting venues.

When Bavaria’s orange mini-dress brigade showed up at Monday’s game, FIFA was ready. Budweiser is the official World Cup beer, the only one sold at World Cup stadiums and official fan viewing sites. Anheuser-Busch Inbev is one of FIFA’s eight “second-tier” World Cup sponsors, giving it exclusive sales rights.

Bavaria NV has been selling special eight-packs of beer including the skimpy orange “Dutchy Dress” since April. Bavaria’s name is on a small blue tag at the bottom of the dress.

Barbara Castelein and a woman who would only give her name as Mirte said Bavaria NV gave them an all-expenses-paid trip to South Africa. They and 34 women who live in South Africa went to the Netherlands-Denmark game dressed as Danish supporters.

But in the 25th minute of the match, the women stripped off their red-and-white gear to reveal their bright orange dresses, tossing the other clothes into the crowd.

“People were standing on their chairs and everyone wanted to make a picture with us,” Mirte said.

FIFA officials escorted the women out of the stadium after the game and took them to the nearby offices of the South African Football Federation, where the women said they were questioned for several hours.

“There were no arrests. No one was detained,” FIFA spokesman Nicolas Maingot said. “The only thing that we have done is actually asking some details (from) these women who have been involved. What seems to have happened is that there was a clear ambush marketing activity by a Dutch brewery company.”

Bavaria NV did not return several phone calls seeking comment from The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Bavaria pulled a similar stunt in 2006, outfitting male fans in distinctive orange lederhosen with a black tail displaying the company’s name.

“I’m a little bit surprised that FIFA didn’t learn a lesson from that,” said Jim Andrews, senior vice president at IEG, a Chicago-based sponsorship consulting firm. “Quite honestly, if they’d let the women into the stadium and let them have their orange dresses and do what they were going to do, they probably wouldn’t have given Bavaria the publicity.”

A huge photo of the women ran across the top of the front page of the Johannesburg daily The Star.

That’s the danger in confronting ambush marketers, said T. Bettina Cornwell, a professor of marketing and sport management at the University of Michigan. Cornwell co-authored a study that found drawing attention to ambush marketing can actually backfire, cementing the renegade company in consumers’ minds.

“The question is, what is the ultimate result?” Cornwell said. “And one of things our study shows is, over time, people lose the particulars. In a few days or weeks, they’ll just remember Bavaria and the World Cup. And those orange dresses.”

Indeed, Mirte and Castelein spent most of Tuesday posing for photos and doing interviews with news organizations from around the globe.

While Maingot said FIFA was looking into “all available legal remedies” against Bavaria NV, Sweeney said the damage is done.

“It’s a cat-and-mouse game,” he said, “and the mouse won.”

AP Sports Columnist John Leicester and AP Sports Writer Graham Dunbar contributed to this report.

here's an even funnier one:

Student shows some cheek to train with champs Italy

By Mark Meadows

IRENE, South Africa, June 17 (Reuters) - A portly South African student joined in Italy training on Thursday but got more than he bargained for when he lost his shorts trying a diving header and was later asked to step aside.

The world champions had invited a talented club player to take part in their session given they had unequal numbers with goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and midfielder Andrea Pirlo missing through injury.

However, the local selected was stuck in traffic so a student from the college where Italy are training gladly stepped in to the breach.

After showing his bare bottom to the world’s photographers following a full length dive he then struggled to keep up with the pace of the running.

Once the original guest finally arrived he was thanked for his efforts and told to sit on the sidelines, where he slumped out looking utterly exhausted.

Perhaps embarrassed by his World Cup cameo, he declined to give his name or speak to waiting press.

(Reporting by Mark Meadows; Editing by Jon Bramley)

Did you watch the Mexico-France game? It was relly good. After the first set of games everyone is playing all-out now.

I hope the US beats Slovenia tomorrow.

Tons of people where I live had on Mexico kits and tee shirts. Entire families. I haven't ever seen quite that many people wearing them before. Lots of times I see guys wearing them, but this was moms, kids, and grandma.

They didn't have them in a World Cup before. They have them in Latin America, but not nearly to this level.

It may not have been the last world cup, but I distinctively remember watching a game a couple years ago thinking about how annoying the horn noise was.

Apparently a similar horn is also used in Brazilian games and other Latin American games according to wiki. I know I have heard it, and thinking my god that is annoying. I almost had to turn the game off just on the horns. And it was a few years ago. I have no idea who was playing, and it's not the only game I have heard that stupid noise.

Yes, I can agree, it's fine for a goal. No complaint. But it's a noise there the entire game.

Indeed. They never even made it on TV where FIFA controls the worldwide feed. Nobody would have known about it. Even the fans present would have just thought they were regular Dutch fans clad in orange. Of course FIFA only keeps making things worse and giving Bavaria more opprtunities for publicity.

How stupid. The Dutch soccer's team colors are orange, no one would even be talking about this if they didn't throw those girls out. It's almost as if this company paid FIFA to make something out of it. If they wanted publicity, FIFA gave them PLENTY.

The USA is losing 1-0 to something called Sylvania I think. I am sure the tens of people who actually care about soccer in America are in shock and dismay. Actually, that's not being fair... I suppose there are scores of fans glued to the screen in some dark and dingy bar in East Kearny or Union City.

Sylvania had war declared on them by Freedonia in the Marx bros. classic. "Duck Soup"

>>>To rescue the small country of Freedonia from bankruptcy, Mrs. Teasdale agrees to donate 20 million dollars if Rufus T. Firefly is appointed its new president. Firefly is a cynical, sarcastic dictator who refuses to play politics by the book. For instance, he does reduce workers' hours--by shortening their lunch breaks! Firefly attempts to win the hand of Mrs. Teasdale, as does Ambassador Trentino of the neighboring country, Sylvania. When the two leaders cannot resolve their dispute over the wealthy dowager, war between the countries is declared, and Mrs. Teasdale's house comes under attack. Who will save the day?<<<<

Lucha horns in Miami

Be interesting to see how baseball fans behave with these things.
