While Wyandanch has a rep, I must say, I hardly ever hear of shootings or stabbings there. Seems like Brentwood and Central Islip dominate. However, I predict that there will be a shooting or stabbing at the new Sonic in N. Babylon. There will be.

Bad place. Police installed a system that detects gunshots which allows them to respond faster to shootings. It's used in Roosevelt and they want to expand it to Hempstead and Uniondale.

The same shift is happening in LA, although on a much smaller scale given the relatively small size of LA's black population. Whites left the city and moved to the suburbs and then when blacks and Mexicans did the same, whites moved back to the city. Now the more urban parts of LA are rapidly gentrifying while the suburbs and the Valley are deteriorating. I've posted before that this is the future for American cities and that our cities will follow the European model where the inner city is the more desirable and whiter area while the suburbs become a place for poor people and minorities.

No. Long Island is awesome. So is Queens.

As far as where Soprano lived, there are areas like that all over the northeast. Long Island has them for sure.

I love Long Island. I think you'd like it if you lived in a decent town and your kids went to a good school. And most of the schools out there are good.

This relates directly to the thread just a few days ago where I accurately pointed out that the only thing that can make gentrification(liberal whites) possible is for blacks to leave because white liberals won't live around them for the most part.

I know that LA's burbs are dying. San Bernardino. Ugh.

You are probably right about the inner-cities becoming the most desirable. It's largely because middle class whites don't want kids while minorities, immigrants, and the upper class reproduce.

Forgot to add, this is why whites are buying 1BR's in LIC and Williamsburg while minorities are going to the burbs. When you have kids you tend to want a home instead of an apartment. When you don't have kids, a 1BR in LIC is ideal.

Although I generally label white liberals as being anti-God, anti-family types who want nothing more in life than a high rise 1BR, Crunch membership, and lots of sex partners, some do have kids. And when they do have a kid, and realize that the projects like Marcy and Queensbridge are still there, they end up moving if they can't avoid the local public schools.

That's how it works.

You have your moments.

What I found shocking about that map is the white colonization of the South Bronx. Of course there they are still a tiny minority, but a change from virtually absent to a trace presence can seem like a huge difference.

The explanation is obvious (and it's going to sound awfully familiar to you): whites don't like to live in neighborhoods with lots of black and brown people. This is especially true if they have children. They go to where the blacks aren't. I wouldn't be surprised if the black and brown colonization of Brentwood, Wyandanch or Central Islip is driving away whites.

I assume that these areas were originally colonized by middle-class blacks and Latinos. I would have expected to see less of these problems among these groups.

LI blows Jersey away.

Long Island is a beautiful place. I worry about it's future.

Huh? Long Island is basically just an extension of New York City.... culture wise...all the way out to Montauk and Orient, you get the same newspapers, the same food in the stores, the same everything...New Jersey is divided into 6 distinct areas for those type of things....1) Northeast NJ (Hudson, Essex, Bergen, and parts of Passaic County), which is basically a 6th borough of New York City, but with The Star Ledger, The Bergen Record, and great hot dogs...2) Extreme North New Jersey (the rest of Passaic County and all of Sussex County), which has more in common with Orange County, New York than it does with the rest of New Jersey...3) North Central New Jersey (Union, Middlesex, Somerset, and Morris Counties), which is sort of boring...they are too far from NYC and too far from Philly to be influenced by either... 4) The Jersey Shore (Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic, and Cape May counties) speaks for itself... 5) Western New Jersey (Warren, Hunterdon, and Mercer counties), which is heavily influenced by Pennsylvania, whether it be the Lehigh Valley or Bucks County...and 6) South Jersey (Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Salem, and Cumberland counties), heavily influenced by Philadelphia and northern Delaware.... In the food stores in those different areas, you can find different foods, sodas, chips, etc. from one section to the next...Nassau and Suffolk? A Waldbaums in Riverhead carries the exact same items as a Waldbaums in Valley Stream...

And scenery? New Jersey has rolling hills and farms spread out all over the state, with the exception of northeast NJ. Long Island is 90% flat, and the farms are all out on the extreme east end...

Nassau and Suffolk is basically all the same from end to end...

They were talking about LI geography last night regarding the serial killer, explaining why the bodies are dumped near the beaches.

I just don't like NJ and think LI is a great place.

Long Island has better pizza too, but you already knew that.

As far as "culture wise" I find Manhattan to be totally different than the rest of America. Culture wise, Rego Park Queens at Massapequa Park are different worlds.

Yes, but saying you don't like New Jersey is like saying you don't like the United States... it's a place with different cultures, different accents, different foods, different scenery, mountains, beaches, farms, forests, cities, etc... Nassau and Suffolk is basically the same all the way out to Riverhead (about 75 miles)...they should call everything east of Riverhead "Peconic County" since it looks different out there, even though the stores sell the same stuff as closer in.

I'll give in on the NYC cuture thing (even though it reaches the Hamptons in the summer), but the rest of it is all the same...
