He signed the Gore bill solely because he had to. He didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of passing his. The interstate highway project was one of the last New Deal projects ever done. Truman blew universal healthcare, which was another. Would have been easier to realign the healthcare structure then than now, after a generation +. |

FOX News used DMCA to remove all copies of the original recordings of what they said during the "Tea party" thing they created with Beck, and ordered all references to it taken off the internet. We watched Stewart and Colbert that night and it was there clear as day, "Look at all those tea partiers out there teabagging!"The original symbols of the "party" was to mail teabags to their reps in Washington and "teabag Washington" ... that FOX News had no idea of what they were saying until everybody else was giggling at them (including Maddow on MSNBC who really sent it up) is demonstrated in what's left to their own reaction to it all. The internet can revise history faster than you can say "Goebbels" and this is just another demonstration of how it works. :( |

No, Eisenhower wanted the railroads made whole again after all they did for the war effort. It was the military industrial complex that wanted the highway bill instead since the Bechtels of the world saw huge dollar signs there. And Eisenhower was pretty pissed about the Military Industrial Complex and their antics in general. |

Eisenhower wanted the railroads made whole again after all they did for the war effort.Eisenhower was a big highwayman. His early army reputation for logistics was made, when he led the Army's cross-country convoy in 1919. Truman was also pro-highway. His career in Jackson County involved building the highway network. He was out of office for 2 years during the 1920's. He was hired by the Good Roads Association as a regional director. The Good Roads Association later became the AAA. FDR was pro railroad (except for the PRR.) His 1939 bill would have had users bear direct costs for highway use through tolls. |

I think we're on two different pages here. Yes, the ability to supply troop movements in various ways (the Autobahn really impressed him) meant that highways similar to that was seen as essential logistics. However the railroads here got chewed up by WWII, and he recognized that. What he wanted was to reimburse the railroads for all the wear and tear and cut them some slack so they could rebuild after the war.The Gore bill did nothing for them. |

The Gore bill did nothing for them [railroads].It wrecked them. he wanted was to reimburse the railroads... Several people have noted that Eisenhower's private views were far more progressive than his public stances. The rationale for these differences has been that he accepted his advisors' cost estimates for his momentary progressive impulse. Remember what Eisenhower's Secretary of Defence said: "What's good for General Motors is good for the country." |

Certainly is conjecture on the part of the other side of this argument, who is claiming that Eisenhower was somehow against the building of the interstates. All I'm saying is that he was for them; certainly his big trip across the USA before WWII was exemplary of his partiality for highways spanning the contiguous 48 at least. |

Crony corporatism going back those daysWhat was it that Romney said about corporations being people? Contrast that attitude with TR's reply to J.P. Morgan, on the latter's White House visit regarding anti-trust action against Morgan's railroad trust. Morgan said, "Send your man to see my man and tell him to fix it up." Roosevelt's answer to that was, "That can not be done. Nobody treats as a sovereign equal to -- of the President. No company can presume to be -- no private interest can presume to be equal to the government. The government must be superior to all of these." |

It is conjecture to say that he was for it because he signed the billIt can be inferred quite readily from his past and his own statements. What's conjecture is that he was in any way against the notion of interstate highways, especially due to the lack of any proof and his verbal statements in favor. Remember his little ditty when he was leaving office about the Military-industrial complex? There's reasons for his disillusionment and completely walking away once he left office.
