Actually, I had a friend who posted the same thing on Facebook:"Maybe I just watch too much House of Cards, but it seems like Jan Brewer found people to pass this shit up to her, so she could let it ride out in the press, cause all this drama, knowing all along she would veto it and in the end, boost her own approval ratings and everyone praises her. Well, that's how Frank Underwood would play it out." |

"the game" ... quite possible, but also possible that there are THAT many morons in your legislature and she pulled an "oh shit" there. All comes down to McCain and Flake and what their part in the game was. Do you think they actually LIKE Brewer and would play along? If I had to investigate this as a story, that's where I'd start. |

I think Flake and McCain think that Brewer is an idiot, but she tends to listen to what they say.Our legislature has ALWAYS been filled with a bunch of "morons" and our governors haven't been much better. Evan Mecham and Fife Symington were criminals. The best governor we have had was Napolitano (although she left the state completely and totally broke). |

IF you're right, that would cause me to believe that it wasn't her game because if they're not all that fond of her, then they would definitely sit on the sidelines and watch her burn. This is the kind of political awareness you need for journalism, you need to not only follow the money, but also figure out who gains and who loses politically from any move they make.Yeah, know about Mecham and Symington ... old hands at that game. :) And I can understand AZ going broke no matter who was in there - the state's always been the tennis court for banksters and other crooks. But yeah, based on what you're saying that story looks a bit thin there. |

I don't believe that McCain and Flake are all that fond of Brewer. I do believe that they like her because she can be controlled. Nothing that Brewer says or does is actually Brewer. She has "handlers" that tell her what to do or say.Scott Smith is the best GOP candidate for governor. He's also the guy who I believe Flake and McCain like the most. He does his own thinking though. |

Palin, the one with the crazy eyes from Minnesota and the few others allowed on stage, so that fits. Heh.But I don't see this helping her either way - those to the left of center see her as a tool and the ones on the right that she's depending on just wrote her off for sacrilege, Olog-style. Then again, GOP'ers ain't so bright so I'm sure this was somebody's brain cramp. After all, look how Palin won't get off the #@%#&*@$ stage neither.(grin) But majors like those two can't afford to waste political capital and if they were involved, they did. After all, they're already tagged as RINOs, what they did here isn't going to help them get re-elected with the mainstreamers. I don't see the point there. |

I think same-sex marriage is a hotter issue to "the base" than abortion."The base"(hey, that would be a great name for a wrestling clique), does not care about abortion because the babies are from Democrat communities. They only care that their tax dollars aren't funneled into the practice. Eventually The Church will be forced to rent out their space so same-sex marriages can be performed. One way or the other same-sex marriages will take place in churches in this country in my lifetime. |

The "social" conservatives and the "fiscal" conservatives. I believe, in Arizona, the split is about 50/50 in terms of GOP voters. Contrary to the silly bills that come out of the state, other than a pocket of the population that is Mormon, Arizona is not a "Bible thumping" state. Polling suggested that only 20% of the population supported SB1062. Therefore, I don't really think that Brewer really hurt herself politically very much at all. |

Brewer had to veto it even if there was no political pressure. The bill was a poorly-conceived solution to a problem that was identified. A better solution that may have passed muster might have been a DADT for businesses and customers (except for bona fide situations for business which would have their circumstances built into the law). |

How can you do DADT if you are going to a baker and asking for a wedding cake for Adam and Steve? There are ways it could have been drafted more artfully. For example, make a pleading standard that essentially follows the framework of McDonnell Douglas Corp. v. Green and its progeny |

The law is clear on the topic and there are ample precedents. The employer has to make "reasonable" accomodation for a person's religious beliefs. If handling pork is something most employees don't need to do, the employer ought to be able to find a non-pork-related job for the employee. If most people who work there with those skill sets have to handle pork, the employer does not need to try to carve out a non-pork-related job. |

If I'm on a checkout line and the cashier refuses to check out a 12 Oz package of bacon - what is a reasonable accommodation? Inconvenience me by asking me to move to another register or inconvenience me by making me wait until they find a pinch hitter to ring up the bacon? Perhaps there'll be a checkout line with a sign that says "NO PORK OR ALCOHOL PRODUCTS". The prospects of this law were hijacked by the LGBT community but it had other implications. |

There is ample precedent for that action and if the store chain is well run the manager will have been trained on how to handle the situation. My company gives its management training on all these kinds of situations. Things like employees who post gory abortion pictures in their cube, or who want to reserve a conference room every week for a prayer meeting. |
