How could a Trump nomination be "too dangerous" if a Dem victory is guaranteed? Is there a real fear that Trump will win?

A victory by one party or the other is never guaranteed.

If Trump is nominated the Democrat would be favored, but some kind of October surprise could happen that could destroy the Democrats' campaign.

Suppose for example it comes out in October that the winner of the Democratic primary is charged by multiple women of having raped them? That's highly unlikely but not impossible.
