Laws like Mississippi's give the imprimatur of legality to greater and greater expressions of hatred, which can be exempted from judicial action by claiming "religious belief". The Mississippi law allows people to exempt their actions from every OTHER "state, local or municipal law, rule, or regulation", so long as they claim religious belief. This means, according to my friends at Lambda Legal, a person in Mississippi can claim they were following Biblical edicts by putting a gay man to death, and avoid a murder charge. That is hardly a condition I would call "safe". |
