I'm almost of the opinion that businesses and private parties should be allowed to discriminate if they want. Pass a law that they need to post who they refuse to serve and let people decide if they want to support such a place. No blacks, no Jews, no gays, no women, no whatever.The problem is that this only works if the bigots are a smaller minority than the people they hate. The gay population is pretty much fixed at ~10% of the total population, but I'd be willing to bet that more than 10% of the population is homophobic. A sign saying "no gays allowed" would attract more bigots than it turns away gay people. Plus, there's regional considerations; plenty of towns in the south have more racists than racial minorities and most businesses rely on local customers. |
