What's the oldest bus you have ever driven or ride? |

Posted by Flxible4life on Sun Dec 9 12:51:52 2012 The oldest bus I have rode was a 1971 Flxible "New Look" and GMC "Fishbowl". Both buses were 35'x 96". I was born in 1980 so I was fortunate to ride those babies. At that time I was living in Toledo, OH, therefore my birthplace. TARTA ( Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority) was my TA. I even managed to ride an AM General bus from TARTA. Thirty-five footer by ninety-six inches of course. |

The oldest bus I remember riding on was one of Suffolk Transit's 1987 Gillig Phantoms right around the time most of them were retired. According to my mother I've been riding buses since I was born, so that may not be the oldest, but its the oldest I remember. |

I know that when I was in my mother's belly she rode GMC "Old Look" buses. I remember ridding GMC RTS series 04 with the slope rear end and later installed with the narrow square A.C. Cap. In 1982 the Grumman "870" which were 40'x96 came in for Tarta and man... That's when my fixation of buses started. That engine/transmission package was off the HOOK!! Detroit Diesel 6V I think with the Allison... I fell in love with the high pitched sound especially traveling 40 miles an hour and more. What a scream!!! |

Belonging to a younger generation, the oldest buses I've ever ridden were 1981-82 NYCTA RTS's before many were re-manufactured. Some of the numbers I remember off hand were #1415, #1510, and #2388, which were in ENY (1510 and 1415) and Flatbush (2388) at the time. |

I remember GM RTS 1510 arriving new to Fresh Pond.I go back to the Old Look days. A few times on our way to school, we would reject a 7000 series Old Look for something newer like a 1969 4100 series Flx New Look. Then sometimes that driver saw what we did and passed us by as well. |

From my personal memory of riding buses I would say the 1982 Grumman 870s that were part of Lynx's bus fleet in Orlando back in the 1990s. I think it was number 611, which was on the Link 11 route heading for the airport.The 6V92TA engine and Allison V730 made these buses noisy as I remembered them, but at the same time I liked them and they were fun to ride on since they would lean. They did rattle a bit too and unfortunately were on their last legs before being replaced by 1996 Gillig Phantoms. I also rode on 1985 built Neoplan AN435s along with 1987 Flxible Metros on the Links 11 and 41 routes. |

The doubledecker that the museum has is my oldest. I'm not sure what year it is 1917? Back in the days when the new looks were around Im sure I was on 1960 or '61s. When I started high school in 1990, Green Bus had 916 which was a '64. It was probably the oldest bus in the city at the time. I'm pretty sure it lasted until 1992. And now with the oldtimers running around every December I've been on buses from the forties up to now. |

Even with my average height of 70 inches, I found the ceilings to be uncomfortably low. |

I rode on some of the Surface Transit first generation Old Look buses (1948 vintage) in the late 1950's and early 1960's in the South Bronx. They had pneumatic exit doors which operated when you stepped down to exit the bus once the driver had enabled them. They were some of the worst maintained buses you could find anywhere. Many of them were coated in black soot on the rear end because they smoked so much everytime the driver accelerated from a stop. You did not want to be driving behind one of those either. By comparison the NYCTA and Queens Transit buses were much better maintained as I found out after I moved to Flushing. |

Well as Best I can tell is that if you start from while I was inside my mother, then I've ridden on every bus Suffolk Transit assigned to Coram Bus Service/CBS Lines Inc. Then the list of possible buses I've ridden, before I have any memories of ridding buses are.1973/1974 GMC T6H4523A (1973's were brought second hand, the 1974 was given to Coram Bus Service as a pilot bus.) 1981 New Flyer D901A 35102C (three were assigned, but by their retirment the whole fleet New Flyers found their way to Coram Bus Service/CBS Lines Inc.) 1982 Gillig Phantom 3596 (4 ot five were assigned, then nearly all were reassigned and assigned back.) 1987 Gillig Phantom 35102 (two were reassigned from another company, possibly only used on the S74, which I never road. Buses I remember riding. 1987 Gillig Phantom 35102 (Bus was assigned to Suffolk Bus Corp, at the time it could have been either 8703,8730,or8731.) 1991 Gillig Phantom 35102 1993 Flxible Metro D 1996 Gillig Phantom 35102 1997 Gillig Phantom 3096 1999 Orion V 05.503 2005 Gillig Phantom 35102 2010 Orion 07.502 |

The oldest bus I've ever rode, was the 1948 GM Old Look #2969 running on the Bx30, back in 2010 during the Holiday runs. (I see I'm not alone in that department) A very odd & unique experience from my perspective, with padded seats & retro advertising! Other than that, I've been on GM Fishbowls, RTS's, & Flxibles, when growing up in the late '80's & early '90's. Man, I miss those days. :( |

AFAIK, the oldest was the SCRTD 2100 series, which were 1954 (!) TDH-4801s. Rode them many a time on the old 95 (Vermont Av-Vernon Av) in the late 70s. In fact, the very last Old Look I rode was 2167 on a line 871 tripper in the spring of 1981. It really should've been retired by then, but it and other Old Looks were held over due to the Grumman crisis. By the summer of 1981, with the Grummans returning and all 940 GMC RTS-04s delivered, the Old Looks (and many early New Looks) left the RTD fleet for good. Some were sold/leased to SF Muni, as they were having a diesel bus shortage in 1981. |

As a child I rode on the late 40s Brooklyn and Queens buses including 2000 and 4000 GMs of both 35' and 40' varieties, 3000 trolley buses, and 5000 Bingham Macks. I remember seeing the old Twins running in downtown Brooklyn, but I don't remember ever riding on one. I loved the 6000 C49 Macks, but they didn't run where I traveled for the most part, so I only rode one a few times. I remember when the 7000 GMs were introduced at the Jamaica Depot with their pink fiberglass seats and passenger operated exit door. They served donuts and cider at the unveiling. Then in 1962 the fishbowls came to Queens, and then the Flxibles a few years later, and on and on... |

For me I would have to say GM TDH-5101 (4800's) out of Ulmer Park enroute to Coney Island, followed by 1954 (GM 4512's)Fort Gordon Bus Co and 1956 MACK 6000 C49's also out of Ulmer Park. But my favorite were the 9000 GM's (1958)out of Fifth Avenue (pink fiberglass wrap around seating and passenger operated exit doors) they were the ones my brother and I grew up on.WE-44 |

Oldest coach i have taken a ride on would be a tie inbetween a 1940 Twin Coach GWFT Trolleybus, and a 1940 PCF-Brill 40-SMT Trolleybus. Oldest Driven would be a 1967 GMC Fishbowl (for a short bit), followed by a 1973 Fishbowl. |

For a really old bus, the oldest I've driven was a 1939 Yellow Coach model 740 that is based at the Connecticut Museum. It was one of the first with the 6-71 diesel. I've driven just about everytrhing produced since then. The ACF C44s with the Hall Scott gas engine were a real challenge. Never knew when you had brakes. |

They were in the 5000's series and were assigned to Flatbush Depot. I also remember the older GMC Fishbowl without the a/c vent on the back of them in the 3600's series that were normally assigned to the B3 and B68. I'M NOT A BIG BUSCHAT CONTRIBUTER, SO, FORGIVE ANY MISTAKES OR ERRORS IN THE DISCRIPTION OF THESE OMNIBUSES. I RODE THIS TYPE OF BUS FROM 1954 THROUGH 1962 ON THE Q-7 OF THE GREEN BUS LINE. The bus line had an older type, with a manual transmission, as a back up when a shortage occurred due to out of service buses. On a snow day our regular diver, John, fought that rebellious bus along Rockaway Blvd. to the "A" train station at Liberty Ave and Rockaway Blvd. The gears were grinding at every stop, but John persisted and delivered a cheering load of passengers every time he got it going. I'll search for a photo of that type , but not riding it very often, my memory may by incorrect. |

The OLD, OLD type, two views of what I thought were Manual transmissions, but turned out to be of a Pneumatic type. Note the different front bumpers, and recessed head lamps.  These are the type I rode.  Note the different paint job.

I was lucky enough to operate the first RTS's NYC transit purchased. The 1200's, 1600's and 1700's. When I started on the job in 1995 there were still a few around in 126 St and a loaner we received from Staten Island in 1997.I rode them to high school in the mid 80's and got to drive them a a newbie! |

In regular service on a regular public bus route:A couple of GM Fishbowls (don't know the model number or year of manufacture) on BC Transit's #25 route in Vancouver. Now here's the thing... not knowing what model year this bus was and knowing that they were manufactured up to the early 80's in Canada, it could very well have NOT been the OLDEST bus, but the oldest LOOKING bus. In that case, I have ridden MANY times on NJ Transit's 1981 Grumman 870's and MC-9A's, as well as their secondhand (lavatory equipped) MC-9's a couple of times. There's also the late 70's/early 80's vintage New Flyer trackless trolleys of BC Transit and SF MUNI that I rode on a few times. Now... as for special services, there is of course the buffet of Old Look, New Look and Fishbowls from the Vintage Bus lineup and the Rockaways R-1/9 and bus excursion last year. I also rode a 1970's vintage MC-5 at Yellowstone National Park. |

This is an example of what I think took me to Far Rockaway from Jamaica in the summertime, while attending summer school at Jamaica High School.I think it was the Jamaica Line, but some how the BEE LINE also comes to mind. The GREEN LINE was my usual bus service, but the BEE LINE and Jamaica Line crossed my path in downtown Jamaica.

I've never driven a bus of any kind. As ofr riding, I'd say that my oldest was likely a first-generation (1959) Fishbowl. I was born in 1968, in Queens- Mom did not drive, and Dad worked 6 or 7 days a week, so we rode a lot of buses. I remmber the green Fishbowl and Flxibles very clearly- even as a preschooler, i could tell the difference, though I didn't know the model names. By grade school, I could identify the Ac and non-AC versions of each.It's possible that I rode an Old Look as well, but I have no memory of that. |

I have very clear memories of RTS #1639, which I rode home a lot from suumer school in 1982. It seemed to be on the same run of the S4 (now the S59) every afternoon. Same driver, too. I guess he had enough seniority to get his own vehicle every day. |

The oldest I've ridden was the GMC old looks that were at MaBSTOA in the early 1970s. I don't know what their bus numbers were as I was a youngster. Most of the oldest buses I rode were NYCTA/MABSTOA and Westchester County GMC TDH-5301 and TDH-5303s. |

The darker color seems to have a bluish tint to it, where the pea soup green on the bus with the Art Deco downward stripe is the older paint scheme.While in high school, the single seat next to the left rear emergency door was the seat of choice. The other cool seats were the ones just in front of the rear bench, on either side. Of course the window seat was a premium seat. Fully padded seats, that was the best. |

As best as I can recall, the oldest bus I ever rode was a 1950s-era Old Look in Nashua, NH in 1986, about a year or so before the city replaced them with Orion Is. |

The Old looks that were operated by the now defunct Hudson Bus Lines around Medford Ma were the oldest I've ridden on.The one and only time I drove a bus it was a 1976 MBTA Flyer Trackless Trolley |

I may have mentioned this in another thread, but one early memory of bus riding is as a child being brought on a Comprehensive bus with a turnstile, presumably a Mack and presumably 66th Street Crosstown. Maybe it was a show-off visit to the doctor who delivered me a few years earlier. Mom would spend the additional nickel to get crosstown on a bus from the Interborough under Broadway. I think my father would more likely save the nickel he had worked for by continuing south to the 42nd Street shuttle and then riding north on the Lex. |

I think they were 96" (I know they were 35'). SCRTD got some 40-foot Old Looks from KCATA in 1974 (RTD #s 6584-6599) and 1975 (6600-6644). I rode both, but don't know if they were 102" wide.I missed out on 6500, but I heard about it. The L. A. Times mentioned it in an article about older RTD buses in 1979, and again 2 years later, when it was finally retired at 32 (!) years of age. For the photo op, they parked it next to 1981 GMC RTS-04 9139, which was the last of 940 RTS that RTD had put into service that year. Ironically, 9139 didn't last nearly as long as 6500, as it was a relatively early retirement in the RTS-04 class (I started keeping track in 1993 when I realized that the RTS were starting to go, and it was apparently already gone by then. The last 1981 RTS were retired by LACMTA in early 2000. Of course, if 9139 (or any of the other RTS from that time) had lasted 32 years, they'd still be in service, with retirement next year! :) |

In regular revenue service during it's service life? That would probably be one of the WMATA Fishbowls (dunno what year the ones I may have ridden were from, though). I also rode WMATA's Flxible New Looks a bit too, and I think they were from 1975?Otherwise, thanks to New York Vintage Bus Fleet, the oldest bus I've ever ridden was a 1948 GMC Old Look, #2969! |

The Huntington Coach buses that Hound is referring to were "Baby Old Looks" - technically TGH3102s with gas engines and a three or four speed automatic. And yes - they did have a turnstile for fare control right on the bus. I rode them when I was in elementary school.The very oldest that I'm clear about having rode on - 2969 from the Vintage bus fleet. But I also remember touring the Brookhaven Laboratory as a kid. And they had chartered buses from all over Long Island to get people around. Some of them may have been ACF of unknown vintage - not sure. In 1969, I rode Walter's Transit PD4104s built in 1953. They were fun on the ride from NYC to Mahopac but retired that same year. The 4106s that replaced them were faster though. And the Fishbowls that were on the line at the time were smooth and quiet - except when the driver messed up on the four speed manual. |
