I rode on some of the Surface Transit first generation Old Look buses (1948 vintage) in the late 1950's and early 1960's in the South Bronx. They had pneumatic exit doors which operated when you stepped down to exit the bus once the driver had enabled them. They were some of the worst maintained buses you could find anywhere. Many of them were coated in black soot on the rear end because they smoked so much everytime the driver accelerated from a stop. You did not want to be driving behind one of those either. By comparison the NYCTA and Queens Transit buses were much better maintained as I found out after I moved to Flushing.
