Years back, borrowed fishbowls, new look flxibles and even RTS's made their way over from NYCTA/MaBSTOA. Of course, not to forget the MCI over the road buses as of late. I know that.The way you worded it with adding the MCI's to a list of buses borrowed for Local Service, could make it seem to people who wouldn't know any better, that the MCI's were used for Local Service. As for the re lettering of those MCI's, that was one thing I didn't understand, though the MTA probably had some reason for doing that. |

For quick borrowing, perhaps, but for long-term operation, renumbering and repainting, or rather adding stripes, did occur. The best and most recent example were the New Look Flxibles (they were hard steering, though!) that were renumbered in the 300-series. Mr. Kim Kimball had just arrived as General Manager and immediately borrowed them to alleviate a shortage of buses. I remember those buses well, having driven many of them. Can't pinpoint the exact year at the moment, but it was between 1985 and 1990. In my early days at MSBA, we had a great variety of buses. Today - ugh! |

Twenty years ago, I leased a 1991 Chevy S-10 Blazer at Robert Chevrolet in Hicksville. Since I wasn't trading in my old car, I had to go there by bus, taking the N-19 and transferring to the N-80 at Sunrise Mall. Believe it or not guess what rolls into the bus stop at Sunrise Mall ? A GM Suburban Fishbowl #100 series, with the blue strip last used by NYCTA !! Yes, in service and I got on a found a seat. En route, a twenty something guy gets on and looks at the luggage racks as mutters "where did this bus come from, Greyhound ?" True story. I wish I had my camera with me. : ( Bill Newkirk |

MSBA covered up the fence so you can no longer see through. Once I dropped by on a weekend and saw some NYCTA or MaBSTOA Flxibles awaiting re branding. The re branding consisted of a can of orange paint and a roll of masking tape that sat on a 4 ft step ladder. That's all, part of the TA blue stripe was used. Not making this up ! Bill Newkirk |

During the early 90's, I recall seeing some new look NYCTA Flxibles and one GM new look LI Bus had borrowed. The numbers remained the same and I don't even think any MSBA restriping was done. I know the GM Blitzs were.Either they were put into service before repainting and renumbering, or some were simply borrowed and returned. Here's MaBSTOA 6582 at MSBA:  Most of the Blitzes had half of the blue stripe covered over in orangem but not all. The "LI BUS" markings were just stenciled on.
