Just like it's custom that during a marriage ceremony, the groom's family sits on one side, and the bride's family on the other. It has nothing to do with inferiority. The women are in the back because the seats face forward, and the men can't be staring at women like that. |

Actually, corn syrup is not unkosher for Passover. The reason corn syrup and other such derivitves are not consumed on Passover is the result of a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. You can read about it here. Also, the custom of not eating kitniyot is not only held by Orthodox Jews, but by nearly all Jews whose families come from the areas of Europe where this tradition was started, regardless of sect. |

Being Jewish(though not as religious as most) i have rode the B110 line. The only qualification a man has is he MUST wear something on his head. The women i notice exit and enter through the back,GIVE their seat up to a man and wind up standing. I don't think many non religious jews ride this line. |

The Chabad temple I went to in Nevada had it split right down the middle. But then, this wasn't any kind of ultra-orthodox synagogue. We did it for the sake of the services, but then all got together afterwards to nosh. There was no gender separation at any other time. |

Because then men could still see the women as they boarded at the front of the bus. In the case of public transit, in order for this to "work" in the view of this type of community, it has to be a front/back split. On buses in Israel where this practice exists, women board at the back (generally) and send a child up to pay the driver if need be, and a punch is chained to a standee pole at the rear door at the back of the bus so they can punch their own tickets. It is unclear what will happen when the paper tickets are discontinued in a few weeks, since no smart card readers will be installed at the back of the bus. |
