I did get to ride 5326 over the Ben Franklin Bridge on the 406 yesterday morning. I was, to say the least, very impressed (though they still have a long way to go to surpass SEPTA's 8000-series New Flyers as my favorite buses). That bus has some good speed to it (and, yes, it's a C9 engine; I could tell right away from my past experiences riding NJT's Neoplan artics). The seats were a little better than the Metro B's, and it looked, from what I saw, that there was no "platform" to the NABIs compared with the Flxs.On the flip side, I had 3149 heading back over the bridge on the 412 (yes, the 412; when's the last time a Flx showed up on that route?). At least I got what will probably be my last Flx Metro B ride. |

Well, as of FY 2008, Comly needed 23 buses to make the scheduled on the 14. Considering that service has increased on the 14 since the time the most recent cost recovery data was available (source of that information is the FY 2010 Annual Service Plan), the 30 artics (factoring in buses out of service for repairs) may not be enough to fill all of the trips on the 14.Getting back on topic (ie. NJT's NABIs - and high floors in general), the new suburban buses seat 42, while the SEPTA NABI's seat 44. I do agree with the above post in that the most notable high floor buses of recent years - the Gillig Phantom and the Orion V - have both been discontinued within the past year or two. The only other high floors on the market, such as it is, are not even worth mentioning (ie. Blue Bird, Thomas, etc). |

Academy had other RTS buses that were built by GM, some of which, as I recall, were ex-NYC Transit buses. Some of those RTS buses saw service on the #22 when it was an IBOA route, others, IIRC, saw service at EWR during the AirLink construction. One of the GM RTS buses that was owned by Academy, I believe, was an ex-DART First State RTS that ended up getting sold third-hand to Krap(f)s Coaches for use on the Coatesville-West Chester route. |

I know which RTS you are referring to, no that wasn't Academy's at any point.Academy's first RTS was from the Detroit DOT ![]() Then they had this one which is ex-DDOT/SEMTA ![]() Followed by this jewel, which was Academy's first bus purchased from the NYCTA ![]() Later on down the line, Academy purchased a bunch RTS's from the NYCTA, and put them in line service in 1999 when Academy took over the Red Apple New York-Hoboken bus line. These buses even saw occasional 22 Hillside Line service. ![]() ![]() ![]() Academy also had 35-foot buses that came from Hertz or other small properties that were used Primarily in Airport Service until the GMC RTS's that were purchased from New York were pushed off the 22 Hillside and New York-Hoboken lines into Airport Service ![]() ![]() The also had a 7 or 8 narrow-bodied GMC RTSs that came from a property in Texas, all but 1 was used in a Continental Express Airport contract, that 1 (Bus #67) could be seen operating the 22 Hillside or the NY-HOB Line. ![]() Sorry for the pic quality, some of these are old prints or digitals when I was still trying to figure shit out, lol! The 22 used to be ran by Academy directly as was the 23 and part of the 126. Either Academy was in the red big time on those routes or parts for the GMs were becoming scarce enough for Academy to turn them over to NJT. |

Just the 4 and 10 are left. The 99S was merged with the 10. The 3 and 16are gone. The 99 became NJT's 6. The MTA illegally put the 144 out of business. The 231 was replaced by the 10 and NJT 981. |

The MTA did not illegally put the 144 out of business. The 144 was dead the minute Red & Tan did away with it. TransportAzumah operates/operated (don't know if he still does) its varient of the line. The MTA came in with the S89 WAY after Red & Tan did away with the 144 Line. And the buses that operate the S89, operate with proper USDOT numbers. Nothing illegal about it. If that was the case then NJT would be ALL illegal while operating into New York City, Orange County NY and Philadelphia, PA. -Trevor |

You need more than USDOT numbers to operate interstate. Yes, even the MTA needs more than that.NJT gets its buses inspected every year (ALL of them) by NJDOT. USDOT ignores MTA buses because "they do not have the resources" to inspect those buses. When I spoke to NYSDOT about it, "no one wants to lose their job" stopping an MTA bus. |

(a) General. Every self-propelled CMV, as defined in §390.5, subject to subchapter B of this chapter must be marked as specified in paragraphs (b), (c), and (d) of this section. [Change Notice] [New Text] (b) Nature of marking. The marking must display the following information: (b)(1) The legal name or a single trade name of the motor carrier operating the self-propelled CMV, as listed on the motor carrier identification report (Form MCS-150) and submitted in accordance with §390.19. Editor''s Note: Paragraph 390.21(b)(2) below is effective until June 17, 2009. (2) The motor carrier identification number issued by the FMCSA, preceded by the letters “USDOT”. LINK New York City Transit is in violation of this. New York City Bus is not an operating entity. I know someone that was fined for this. The ticket was $200 for one violation. §396.17 Periodic inspection. [Change Notice] [New Text] (a) Every commercial motor vehicle shall be inspected as required by this section. The inspection shall include, at a minimum, the parts and accessories set forth in Appendix G of this subchapter. EDITOR''S NOTE: Appendix G is located at the back of this pocketbook. EDITOR''S NOTE: Appendix G is located at the back of this handbook. NOTE: The term commercial motor vehicle includes each vehicle in a combination vehicle. For example, for a tractor semitrailer, fulltrailer combination, the tractor, semitrailer, and the fulltrailer (including the converter dolly if so equipped) shall each be inspected. (b) Except as provided in §396.23, a motor carrier shall inspect or cause to be inspected all motor vehicles subject to its control. (c) A motor carrier shall not use a commercial motor vehicle unless each component identified in Appendix G has passed an inspection in accordance with the terms of this section at least once during the preceding 12 months and documentation of such inspection is on the vehicle. The documentation may be: (1) The inspection report prepared in accordance with paragraph 396.21(a), or (2) Other forms of documentation, based on the inspection report (e.g., sticker or decal), which contains the following information: (i) The date of inspection; (ii) Name and address of the motor carrier or other entity where the inspection report is maintained; (iii) Information uniquely identifying the vehicle inspected if not clearly marked on the motor vehicle; and (iv) A certification that the vehicle has passed an inspection in accordance with §396.17. (d) A motor carrier may perform the required annual inspection for vehicles under the carrier’s control which are not subject to an inspection under §396.23(b)(1). (e) In lieu of the self inspection provided for in paragraph (d) of this section, a motor carrier may choose to have a commercial garage, fleet leasing company, truck stop, or other similar commercial business perform the inspection as its agent, provided that business operates and maintains facilities appropriate for commercial vehicle inspections and it employs qualified inspectors, as required by §396.19. (f) Vehicles passing roadside or periodic inspections performed under the auspices of any State government or equivalent jurisdiction or the FMCSA, meeting the minimum standards contained in Appendix G of this subchapter, will be considered to have met the requirements of an annual inspection for a period of 12 months commencing from the last day of the month in which the inspection was performed, except as provided in §396.23(b)(1). (g) It shall be the responsibility of the motor carrier to ensure that all parts and accessories not meeting the minimum standards set forth in Appendix G to this subchapter are repaired promptly. (h) Failure to perform properly the annual inspection set forth in this section shall cause the motor carrier to be subject to the penalty provisions provided by 49 U.S.C.521(b). LINK This is a $500-$1,000 fine per violation. Again, New York City Transit is in violation of this. A bus company just received an $80,000 fine for not inspecting buses, not having full insurance, AND using drivers after they tested positive for drugs. The fine is fair, but USDOT likes to go after little guys struggling to eat. It was a big deal when the guy in California flipped his bus, but we have someone running over 200 interstate trips a day that has no external oversight on their buses. Talk about cute. |
