I know nothing about Budd cars, but maybe someone else can help you on that. I don't pay too much attention to multiple units but Pacer/Sprinter DMU types in Britain have hydraulic transmissions, which are very smooth but the change is perceptible by the dropping revs. Apart from that (an electric transmissions) the only other type I've ridden are the old 1960s DMUs, which were semi-automatic and relied on the driver shifting gears himself. Again this was smooth, as long as done properly.

So there will be the same number of doors on a 600 foot train as they have with 4 per car on 60 foot cars. Makes perfect sense.

They were so heavy that the worst that the driver could do was a small jerk. At least the ones I rode to school Saltburn to Redcar each day.

I hope you realize that you really don't know how to shift gears unless you've done both of the following:

1) Drive an 18-wheeler with manual transmission (yes there are tractor-trailers with auto)
2) Drive a "Super Sherman" tank, or a Centurion tank and successfully get it up the gears.

Before the last of the class 101s were removed from service I used to generally get the 20.xx train back from Chester to Crewe as this used to turn one up regularly when I worked in Chester. As you no doubt know, you could sit behind the driver's compartment and watch him do his thing. Some would change gear properly and smoothly but the odd one would leave the throttle open and slam it straight from one gear to the next. That was what caused the jerk!

Don't know why they would ever go backward like thagt. They only reason they went back with the last generatioon of cars s because of the failure of P-Wire. It's not like the current propulsion system failed.

The vac train also has both a slide controller with a brake handle.

It's not your business to tell anyone not to rant about anything they want. Yes, his rant about Israel was dumb (but not 100% wrong).

I am a sabra and my father fought to establish the state of Israel, and there are plenty of things royally screwed up over there, including some as[pects of how Arabs and Palestinians were dealt with since the late 1940s. There are also a lot of things they do right.

Just because somebody has "been there" doesn't mean squat, necessarily. You can even live in a place for years and have your head in the sand, or up your ass, or wherever, and nor know squat about where you live. That's as true of Israel as it is anywhere else.

They look quite similar to me. They're far closer in design than other 3rd or 4th generation subway cars have been on other systems. Stockholm's very modern metro cars have already been mentioned, as have Berlin's slightly more conservative cars, but Munich's new cars are every bit the departure the Swedish cars are. By comparison with these designs the NYC cars are virtually identical once you get beyond superficial details like color and headlight placement.

Not to mention 36's have rollsigns and the last stop on the front. Wheres an 142 have LCD sign and it doesn't show the last stop.

As I said, those are superficial details. If we accept the principle that the R62 was just a modification on the R36 design as Mr Wong posits, then the ease with which they modified the R62 into an R142 stand-in for the Taking of Pelham 123 by changing those superficial details must mean the R142 itself is similar to the R36.
