They're far closer in design than other 3rd or 4th generation subway cars have been on other systems. Stockholm's very modern metro cars have already been mentioned, as have Berlin's slightly more conservative cars, but Munich's new cars are every bit the departure the Swedish cars are. By comparison with these designs the NYC cars are virtually identical once you get beyond superficial details like color and headlight placement.
