I know nothing about Budd cars, but maybe someone else can help you on that. I don't pay too much attention to multiple units but Pacer/Sprinter DMU types in Britain have hydraulic transmissions, which are very smooth but the change is perceptible by the dropping revs. Apart from that (an electric transmissions) the only other type I've ridden are the old 1960s DMUs, which were semi-automatic and relied on the driver shifting gears himself. Again this was smooth, as long as done properly.
