My guess is that it's mostly a matter of converting infrastructure. The subway in this area - NYCT and PATH - have a variety of characteristics that would have to be met to allow compatible running. So that means the power (third rail at the correct voltage DC), signal system, clearances (especially vertical - subway tunnels are fairly tight), high platforms at the right height and of the proper length, etc. It would be fairly difficult and expensive to do. Plus I doubt that we would ever see street running with subway equipment. |

I agree with you 100%! Greed is not good. And greed is driving this country down the toilet. I heard something said on CNBC today, that the economy is bigger than the government. Think that over. And while our Congress works about 60 days a year, and spend the rest of the time being cajoled in the hallways and get their palms gresed, we get the BOHICA, bend over here it comes again. Necessities such as health care, good education, job availability and good dependable transit are poofed away by the men behind the curtain. |

I doubt that we would ever see street running with subway equipmentOff-topic, but the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee and Chicago, Aurora and Elgin interurbans were exactly that, albeit they had to switch to trolley wire for the street running. Also, the SIR ran once with commuter equipment. Remember the MP72s on there? Not to mention that the BMT-like cars on SIR had seating more conducive to commuter rail. |

Also, the SIR ran once with commuter equipment. Remember the MP72s on there?Well, I'M not nearly old enough to remember that... :) But I've seen pictures. Not sure what the long term plans for SIR are, but theoretically they could replace their R44s with either the NYCT successor to the R44s (the R179s, we believe), or even LIRR's future order of M9s (which they will need for fleet expansion, possibly for M3 replacement, although I tend to doubt the latter). Assuming that the clearances are OK to run M9s, which would be rather larger than their subway relatives, the big question is how those cars would be maintained. From what I've read, SIR's heavy duty maintenance is done at NYCT shops, and the cars are nowadays trucked over; apparently there was a barge used in the past, but not for some years now, after modifications at the St George terminal. Having NYCT do the heavy work on the R44s makes perfect sense, since NYCT knows their R44s. But LIRR would really be the source for maintaining M9s, which would involve getting those cars out to probably Arch St or Hillside shops. Plus, the M9s would be designed for LIRR's more slightly more generous DC potential. They would also be considerably heavier than R44 cars. All of that leads me, off the cuff, to think that either a standard R179, or an R179A with a modified interior would do the trick. Are those seats reversible? |

That "board" if it even is one or just looks like it, is the way SIR covers their cab-door windows. You can't make a tit-for-tat comparison with NYCT equipment. There are many little difference here and there since they are not one entity. They post the old Evacuation Instructions and in a different place, they have "Watch the Gap" on the doors, they have "Do Not Lean On Door" atop the doors and do not have "Do Not Hold Doors" they're also less concerned about people holding doors open than NYCT from what I've seen. And they have the /\/\ logos. The cars are not in the greatest shape, but the reasons for it have already been explained and go beyond the fact that they're "old". NYCT has even older equipment which is still running and will continue to do so for a few years. When 2011 or 2012 comes along, SIR will get new cars, but based on how their R-44s have been treated by the SI riding public, don't expect the NTTs or M9s to be treated any better. In a few years they're going to be in the same shape. |

The North Shore line is in such serious disrepair that they'd likely need to tear out anything that exists and replace it. The ROW hasn't seen a train in 20+ years; the section that runs along the waterfront is so badly deteriorated that in some places the rails hang in midair above the shoreline. And the line runs through a number of private industrial properties, without any grade speration (Caddell, Atlantic Salt) and under a building that I'm surprised hasn't been completely demolished (US Gypsum). The costs don't surprise me. A better solotion, given the cost, would be a completely new line along the SI Expressway from the existing ROW to Richmond Ave.As for a line along the West Shore Expressway? Completely useless. There is such a low population along that corridor, the cost could never be justified. |

Except in the case of Staten Island's west shore, the majority of the land is either protected wetlands or parkland that can't be developed. The only area that's really available for development is the former GATX site, and that's more likely to see a toxic waste dump than housing. |

No, the connection currently in use connects to the (compass) northbound chemical coast line. The R44s on Staten Island are in much worse shape, both mechanically and visually, that they SHOULD be replaced with something else. The overhauls of the cars were done poorly by NYCT in-house crews, and the SIR crews didn't change any of their lousy maintanence practices when they came back from overhaul. For trains that only run through one short tunnel, the HVAC vents are particularly grimy; the ceiling paint is peeling, the walls are cracking where the door motors are, and the floors and seats are peeling (the latter due mostly to vandalism). |

Oops, missed that connection to the chemical coast line. Thank you for pointing that out. Still, it runs nowhere useful. Also, I noticed the NEC NB connection, but that also lacks any real useful destination other than EWR and Newark. Unless you wanted to use it as an express to boost service to NYP from, say, Elizabeth, there's no point to using that routing. If the North Shore line were to run anywhere useful, it would have to run SOUTH on the NEC. |

May I interject that I had a Blue Moon for the first time recently. I liked it so much that 1 turned into 5! Excellent Molson product. I always found Bud to be bitter, like Schmidt's of Philadelphia and the old New York Rheingold. Just not for my taste. |

Gotcha on a technicality, bro ... Franklin Square is ever so slightly out of the five burros. :)But yeah, one of the reasons I avoid the gin mills in NYC is that the other three are typically all you can find. I remember last year, ended up with a buddy at Junkee Stadium ... asked if they had Sam Adams. Heh. Had a coke. (grin) |

Not a problem. And to brighten your day, Croxley Ale House recently opened a beer garden in Alphabet City. Somewhere around Avenue B & E.3rd Street. So on your trip to the stadium you had a Coke & a smile? (ducks from thrown rotten tomato) |

Blue Moon on tap? With an orange slice? Good stuff.I recently found Blue Moon in bottles. tried it and wasn't impressed. For me the only beer that's as good canned as it is on tap is Guinness. |

Wasn't my tab for the seats and a boring ball game. =)Croxley, eh? Nice touch ... now if only 2nd Avenue Deli hadn't moved uptown. Ah well ... will find a way to get down there one of these days. |

Kewlness on a stick! And as to "diet" or "lite" ... I either do the real thing, or I pass. Had a couple of cokes, if it matters. Would have prefered rum perhaps, but it was a ball park. Heh. |
