You'd have to find a way to connect it with the NEC, b/c right now there's really no useful place to run the trains once they get to NJ. |

Where are Bushwick LRTs gonna go? Where are Lower Montauk LRTs gonna go? Even if they ran over the Willy B, there's no place for them to go after that. I think you'd be more likely to see LIRR return service to Bushwick before you see any other options come in to play |

I'm saying North Shore line commuter rail to NJ and have it run onto the NEC somehow(new track connection) to the employment districts. West Shore should be LRT, an extension of HBLR over the Bayonne down Willowbrook to SI College, then down Richmond Av to the SI Mall, then down the parkway to at least Huguenot station, but preferably all the way to Point Pleasant Park and Ride. |

Weren't most of the SIRT stations already renovated in the early 90s? They're not exactly luxurious, but why should they be? For a relatively free system, decent platforms with canopies should suffice. As for the trains, as others have said this may be due to the fact that it's mainly free and also that many kids ride it and have no respect for the system so they scratch up the seats etc. Even when they eventually get NTTs or M7s, 8s, 9s or whatever, they're going to end up in the same shape. They're still nothing compared to NYCT during it's dark era. |

Rail transportation is actually one of the oldest forms of public transportation, so maybe what SI needs is more of an ancient transportation system. Seriously though, buses are transportation. Therefore they play a part of the transportation system. |

They spent wads of money for the 160's, couoldn't they justify buying a few more and increase the order? Maybe they could've gotten a discount.Because the plan was to deliver new SIR cars in 2012, presumably as either an option order to the R-160 cars or maybe as part of the R-179 order. See, they are one step ahead of you. Except that now that money is tight, it was just posted that the current plan is to rehab the R-44SI cars and purchase new cars in 2015. I imagine that in 2015, they will still be related to some previous or existing subway car order. Another thing, why couldn't some of the newer "old stock" from the mainland be transferred to the SIR and more new units be budgeted in? Because there's nothing newer than R-44's available on the mainland! Instead, it seems they have decided to rehab the R-44SI cars for the time being. |

Also SIR is technically under a different regulatory regime - they answer to FRA, if I'm not mistaken. Clearly, they don't have to meet all FRA standards, but I don't know the details, and there might be complication with trying to grandfather in new infusion of older, definitely not at all FRA-compliant equipment. |

Still, there must be 36 cars somewhere in the vast MTA system that could be used on SIR. No? |

Let's see. SIR has what, 36 cars?I recall 64 or 66 cars. How much of that could have been allocated from the original huge order of those 160's? Remember that R44s are the longest cars used on NYCT: 75'. So it's not a matter of 1:1 replacement, first off. Secondly, NYCT isn't yet replacing the R44s, so it's not exactly clear why SIR's R44s should be replaced ahead of their NYCT brethren. Still, there must be 36 cars somewhere in the vast MTA system that could be used on SIR. No? Needs to be something EMU, so that rules out quite a lot. As I said before, all of the available units from NYCT that would be reefed aren't suitable replacements for R44s. MNR has about 40 M1As, but they still put those to occasional use, and the third rail on MNR is of a different type, and they're designed to use higher voltage, and they require greater clearances, being 85' long, and rather taller than subway equipment. It's not at all clear to me that SIR is up to maintaining those cars, either, or that those cars would even fit most NYCT shops. SIR's best hope for new rolling stock will be, I think, either as part of the order that replaces the R44s, or perhaps - assuming that SIR can handle commuter rail stock - maybe LIRR's future M9 order. |

The SIR R44's don't ride as smooth as the NYCT R44's. The SIR 44's are still good cars though. They don't even sound like the NYCT R44's. But the SIR 44's go much faster. The SIR 44's ride kinda like the slants. |

I'll have to pay closer attention next time I ride on SIR! Never tried an express, so that's definitely on the to-do list. |

Thanks for that. I was wondering if there was an existing NEC link. I know (at least, FWIKAI) there is a connection to the "Chemical Coast" line. |

From what I can see, connecting to the chemical coast line requires a reverse move(the tracks connect from the west), or you could go a very roundabout way. |

Naw, I meant, great overall description regarding the import situation. It is mighty unfortunate that U.S.A. has gone that way. We have taken the easy route to "cheaper" prices. When truth is, in the long term it's going to be mighty mighty expensive.Pisses me off, why the f*ck AREN'T our corporations using their collective heads more? How the hell could it be cheaper to make a can opener in China or Vietnam than it would be to make that can opener in Newark or Detroit or Oakland? What, f*ckin' transportation costs are THAT large a percentage of total product costs?? The labor costs are THAT much cheaper than what our own labor force costs are?? I don't believe it. It's simply...a greedy sniveling "accountant types" mentality. Basically, it's the owners and the corporations proclaiming "I'm gonna still have my monies...the employees will just have to "accept" this "new" "reality" of modern manufacturing" as we "outsource" our production and leave the "thinking" work home, doing so in order to remain "competitive" with the world." This is a receipe for national economic and social collapse. Most of "The fat cats" really don't give a shit. |
