Loved riding them when I came home from work. But I think the best times were the early 90's when the Flushing line was under major re-construction. I always after leaving walking on the temp. platforms. |

I remember them blazing up and down the Lexington Ave line, especially inbound trains through the Joralemon tubes in the 1970's and early 80's before the slowdown. Even the R62 cars on the 4 line, when new, still blazed like speed demons. |

I only knew them during the Redbird era. What I liked best about them is that they were simple yet effective veterans of the subway. No fancy doodads to malfunction, no complicated electronics to break. Subway cars the way they ought to be. When you rode a Redbird, you were riding the subway. The R142's and the R160's are nice but too antiseptic for my taste. The Redbirds were as Noo Yawk as a bagel and a shmear. |

I have nothing but good memiories on those great cars. They gave great service fun to ride had RFW and went fast. They were my favorite cars then those POS R142/A came and ruined everything. Just like what the R160 is doing in the B div. I wish i knew how to build an time machine so i could go back to the 90s and ride these great cars again. |

My first ride on a Redbird was in 1996 when I was in third grade. I was with my father on a 6 train going up the East Side to see a plastic surgeon after I had smashed up my left arm. I was 9 or 10 at the time and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world to be able to stand at the window and look out into the tunnel. This was a few years before I started to really like the subways. I though the Redbirds were so much cooler then the R46 they had on the F line neat my house. |

I always check it since I hang onto the handle for support. As to the R29 incident I described above, (thankfully) no one was at leaning on or near the door when it slid open, and no one opened it, it slid open entirely on its own as the train was pulling into a station |

But that photo is sort of deceiving since those fridge tiles are only at the extreme ends of the two Borough Hall stations. |

When I was 8 years old, I was waiting on the north end, of the southbound platform, of the Franklin Ave IRT station, when one came roaring into the station, on the express northbound track. It was 1959, (sometime in October; the sun set at about 6:00PM) and I was shocked; I never saw a new Lexington Ave Express before. I remember the new fluorescently lit sign; is said WOODLAWN RD (in green letters) instead of WOODLAWN JEROME AVE like the Lo V's it (and other SMEEs) was to later totally replace. I told a couple of friends later, but they didn't believe me, we still somehow knew it was inevitable anyway. I told my father, who was a TA Construction Flagman, and he just laughed as he told me: "we have to progress".The last time was when I caught 7752, on the 6 line, sometime in 2003. I got off at 110th St and thought back to 1959, it could very well have been the same car that I saw then. That irony was not lost as I watched it pull out; it was the last time I saw an R26 in revenue service. |

CLICK HERE FOR DA RIDE----> IRT Redbirds 14 Street to Chambers (shot in 2000; a Sharp Viewcam 8mm camurrah) My Recollections: -R17s on the 1 line (1982 or so). -Storm door cracked open nb between Dyckman and 225, and I was out there unshielded for a blissful 7 minutes. -INTENTIONALLY waited for a Redbird on the 2 in the year 2000 after the R142 junkers started arriving, I'd wait around on the platform 10+ minutes just for a Redbird in Manhattan. and there's this GEM with the Birdies roaming around East 180th and moar~~!!! -WAITED AROUND TWO HOURS-PLUS at TSQ in 2003 only to hear the sole redbird set was in the yahd that day and didn't come out. -RODE A THREE-TRIPPER with Kool-D at the RFW on the 7 a coupla days before the Last Ride. |
