I only knew them during the Redbird era.

What I liked best about them is that they were simple yet effective veterans of the subway. No fancy doodads to malfunction, no complicated electronics to break. Subway cars the way they ought to be.

When you rode a Redbird, you were riding the subway. The R142's and the R160's are nice but too antiseptic for my taste. The Redbirds were as Noo Yawk as a bagel and a shmear.
