The R26 above all. When I was 8 years old, I was waiting on the north end, of the southbound platform, of the Franklin Ave IRT station, when one came roaring into the station, on the express northbound track. It was 1959, (sometime in October; the sun set at about 6:00PM) and I was shocked; I never saw a new Lexington Ave Express before. I remember the new fluorescently lit sign; is said WOODLAWN RD (in green letters) instead of WOODLAWN JEROME AVE like the Lo V's it (and other SMEEs) was to later totally replace. I told a couple of friends later, but they didn't believe me, we still somehow knew it was inevitable anyway. I told my father, who was a TA Construction Flagman, and he just laughed as he told me: "we have to progress".

The last time was when I caught 7752, on the 6 line, sometime in 2003. I got off at 110th St and thought back to 1959, it could very well have been the same car that I saw then. That irony was not lost as I watched it pull out; it was the last time I saw an R26 in revenue service.
