SAS Phase 3 Includes Increased Capacity Through Roosevelt Island |

See the how it curves east north of the proposed 55th St station? That is your increased capacity to Roosevelt Island. We can call it the U train. The U train will run local on the QB. If no new infrastructure is built to accommodate this route, it will terminate at 179th St. That's 25tph (15 for the F and 10 for the U) through Roosevelt Island. Now Roosevelt Islanders just have to wait 10+ years and then get their politicians to lobby the MTA with a service increase proposal that makes sense. |

And there are provisions in the 63rd Street Tunnel around the 2nd Avenue area to connect it with the proposed SAS route. It could, might and can be done.-William A. The station is in for the 63ave station of the 2Ave line. The Back wall that in the station now is only as Temp and will be removed once the station is ready to be used for the Q.Robert |

Another connection needs to be built east of 2 Av that will go uptown. That Rockaway route can use this. The thing is like most people say, it'd probably be impossible since the route won't hit any CBDs. |

Thank you for posting this, this is what I said to the poster when that topic was created last night, about the Queens Spur, and aside from R.I.'s "Capacity problems", this could work for t3h Q.B. Trunk in general, and it would make another reason for the anti-tram folk to complain, LOL...for the record, I actually liked the ride, not gonna ride on a windy day though :-P |

If they ran this other SAS train (looks like U won't fly) at 10tph on the local tracks, the service would be sufficiently differentiated from other QB routes (1 seat ride to the East Side) to draw passengers from other routes.I see two obstacles to getting this to happen. The first is that the MTA has yet to commit to such a route. The second is where the line terminates. 179th could work, but getting one line past 71st, with two lines still terminating there, might be tricky. This is where a new three track, two island platform local terminal, on the NE corner of Jamaica Yard, that uses that yard's loop, could have high utility. |

I personally thought (puts up anti-flame shield) of a new terminal at Union Turnpike. The local would spur off/on from its current tracks west of Forest Hills/71 Av to a new lower level, which would split to 4 tracks, with the 2 inner tracks for terminating U. Tpke. trains, and the 2 outer leading to a new Union Turnpike Line.Obviously, this new lower level would have cross-platform transfers, still thinking how it would look like with the yard leads and all at the lower level, and this is just PART of my complete idea for the Queens Blvd Trunk (Super Express lines, new EL's, room for provision, etc) course all of this would be very costly and never would come to pass, but, I can have ideas, right? I'm only 16 :-P (Now if only I could find a way to make a visual to post what I mean...) |

Download Inkscape and learn how to use it.2. Use it to draw your idea. 3. Export it as a bitmap image file (JPG or PNG are preferred). 4. Upload the image file to an image hosting service. 5. For some reason, while they plan to build the connection, they do not plan to run regular service through it. Else, you would see the new line along with the "T" in the full lengtth SAS maps they have included in the SAS report. |

There would have to be a plan as to the Queens Blvd-2nd Av route's northern terminal. Not enough terminal capacity at Forest Hills under present operations. |

For some reason, while they plan to build the connection, they do not plan to run regular service through it.My guess is that the MTA was able to get federal approval for the project without committing to SAS/QB service, so they did so to manage expectations. If they commit to the service during the funding review process, they have to provide the service. They are better off getting the SAS built and working, and then figure out how they can provide additional QB service from the SAS. |

As noted in the other thread on this:I would have a new tunnel that would initially serve as a terminal on the northern end of Roosevelt Island and first stop in Manhattan on 76th or 79th street and York-1st Avenues before joining the SAS with a stop at 72nd/2nd and then most likely going with the Q train to Broadway via 63rd street. This would most likely have the N for the new line, with the Q remaining as it will once the SAS is built, the W as the full-time Astoria line and the R as it is now. Eventually, this new tunnel could be extended into Queens and become the super express on Queens Blvd. that can terminate at the never used upper level of Roosevelt Avenue. That to me is what could be done on this. |

What next the Queens Blvd Super express? I mean there's no way to fit that new Queens-SAS line unless an existing QB line was altered [ie: V via 2nd Av rather than 6th Av] |

Have the (V) break off into the unfinished tunnels that were meant to connect to the Old Rock after 63rd Drive. The tunnels would of course be completed. That would leave enough capacity for the (R) and the SAS train at 71st St. (or have the R break off) |

Yes, but you would still have 5 lines running thru 74th-Roosevelt. Otherwise the R and V will have to be cut back to accomodate this new local line [since it won't fit on the express]. |

Which is why I like my idea better of building a new tunnel that would run first from Roosevelt Island to a northern tunnel for the SAS at 76th or 79th street, stopping in Manhattan at York-1st Avenues before going to the SAS. This could eventually be builtinto a super express in Queens that can used the never used upper level at Roosevelt Avenue. |

Yes, but you would still have 5 lines running thru 74th-Roosevelt.There is nothing wrong with running 5 lines on the QB as long as more than 30tph is not scheduled on any track, and as long as the 71st St terminal issue is resolved. |

Having one of those services have 63rd Drive as a terminal would somewhat resolve the 71st St issue. I would personally prefer that a SAS service use the Old Rock trackways from the ESA hole to Rock Park and the (G) use Rego Park as a terminal but in the absence of that, the Queens SAS (or the V or R) could use 63rd Dr. |
