Cool pics...In the one shot of Richmond Hill from the street, the street sign says "Brendan Byrne Plaza". First, what was Gov. Byrne's connection to the area? (I saw him at Princeton's P-rade in June and he was not looking, shall we say, vigorous.)Second, the street sign above the Brendan Byrne sign is illegible, but almost looks like it says "GARBAGE St". What does it actually say? |

It would be very easy to build a subway el over the freight/LIRR tracks here. No NIMBYs to complain about it. Unfortunetely for that very reason there wouldn't be any customer base either. I don't see any major residential development there in the near future either. The area near the Kosciuzko Bridge looks and smells really foul. |

South Maspeth (Laurel Hill) is very industrial , with mostly trash/recycling and scrap industries, truck freight depots and some blue collar shops. Not the best area either. |

That embankment was built when they grade eliminated the area around Richmond Hill. Of course originally, Richmond Hill was called Clarenceville.Here's a photo from the 1910's. I believe it was grade eliminated in the early 1920's. Richmond Hill always had the most substantial station on the line. Haberman and Penny Bridge never had anything more than a simple station shed. Fresh Pond, Maspeth, and Glendale had simple shed-like station houses, at least small buildings. Richmond Hill had a "real station", the one below:

Here's the original Glendale Station house, around 1900. This is before Penn Station opened up, so this was a busy little line back then with lots of LIC ferry traffic coming through. Glendale's little stationhouse burned down in the 1920's. Glendale's stationhouse was then replaced with the shed seen in the photo in my above post. Maspeth was just east of where Haberman later wound up being, I believe at 54th and Rust. Maspeth also had a little small stationhouse, a little smaller than Glendale's. See Maspeth here in a 1923 photo, below Glendale As you can see, in the 1920's, all the stations were "real" stations...but by the late 1930's, service did dwindle, as can be seen in my Glendale photo in the above post:

The stationhouse dates from before the grade elimination took place. From the looks of the photo, it appears the grade elimination had been completed (I think I see the wall that's still there by the stationhouse). I have seen photos however when the rails were still on the surface, and what a mess that intersection must have been! The train went right through the Fresh Pond Rd and Metropolitan Ave intersection! it was a three way intersection between those two roads and the railroad! Granted, the traffic wasn't that bad yet, but what an intersection to have a train go right through! |

The electricity came from the Rockaway line, where it crossed over the Montauk branch. I believe the third rail ran to the LIRR Fresh Pond Yard. I think it had something to do with the electric freight they used to run. |

Ah yes, that's what I thought. The third rail came down from the Rockaway line in Glendale, and ran to Fresh Pond Yard for the freight. So the Montauk Line used to be electrified from where the Montauk line crosses the Rockaway Line (Glendale Cut Off) to Fresh Pond. Interesting, that they never ran it through to Jamaica through Richmond Hill.Of course, Catenary electrification was also in the area, as the Bay Ridge Line was completely electrified with Catenary from Bay Ridge, through Fresh Pond, and to Hell Gate. ....amazing the foresight they had....but then just let all those improvements go to the wayside. |

I am not sure, but since its in Richmond Hill, and Richmond Hill already had a station on the Montauk Branch?The LIRR often made up names when it had nothing better to call a station. I think "Parkside" on the Rockaway line over at Metropolitan and Woodhaven was called that because they already had a Woodhaven Station. There are other seemingly "made up" station names also over the years. |

He was born and raised in NJ and it appears his entire public and private career has been in NJ, with the exception of his distnguished service in the USAAF in WWII. And he's not mentioned anywhere in the "bible" of NYC History, The Encyclopedia of New York City. So if anyone can shed some light on this . . . |
