The remains are harder to spot other than a nearby street named South Railroad Av (I think that's what it's called) and a narrow corridor next to a building that looks like it used to lead to the station itself. |

There was one time some years ago when LIRR trains were unable to use the tunnels to Manhattan. I think they were Amtrak tunnels. I'll be corrected if I'm wrong. Customers going to Manhattan were advised to detrain at Richmond Hill to catch the J train at 121 Street. LIRR officials were afraid LIC, Woodside, Jamaica and Hunter's Point stations were going to be overcrowded with commuters.Service along the line going to be beefed up for rush hour traffic. Richmond Hill station was meant for Manhattan bound customers to get to Manhattan. Not to give customers LIRR service to LIC. |

At the time I was working the booth at Woodhaven on the J. People came down to the booth demanding transfers to the Q11 bus so that they could transfer again at Woodhaven Blvd for the R line to Manhattan. |

If service at Richmond Hill actually went to Manhattan instead of LIC, I'm sure the entire line would have had more customers. The fare is more on the LIRR. But it is faster going to Manhattan than the J or any subway going to Manhattan. |

Very true, but I saw enough obnoxious passangers to color my perception of them for years. I suppose they probably did not like having to get off their nice M1's and then get onto slow, creaky R16/27/30's on the J at the time.Heck, most J riders didn't want to get onto the slow, creaky R16-27-30's at the time!! |

That IS the platform...to the right of the train is an "island platform" in the ballast, which was the Jamaica bound platform. The track to the right of the "platform" is the Bushwick branch track. Actually, until the 20's, that's where you would also wait for the Bushwick trains. To the left of the train is the LIC bounc "platform", also in the ballast. If you look closely, you can see the "curb" of the platform on both the "wall" platform, and the island platform. That had to be one of the funnest stations to wait for a train at...especially in the winter when it got dark early...there was no lighting, just whatever second hand light you got from the street above, which wasn't all that close... |

No. Only Fresh Pond had a haphazard "thing" that passed as a shed. The other stations had nothing (excluding Richmond Hill of course). Here they are in all their pathetic glory. These were taken in the early 90's, around 1991 or so. Excuse the quality, as they are slides, and I scanned them with an old crappy slide scanner some years ago, but can't find (or have time right now) the ones where they are scanned with my newer slide scanner: Glendale: Fresh Pond Haberman: Penny Bridge: |
