That IS the platform...to the right of the train is an "island platform" in the ballast, which was the Jamaica bound platform. The track to the right of the "platform" is the Bushwick branch track. Actually, until the 20's, that's where you would also wait for the Bushwick trains. To the left of the train is the LIC bounc "platform", also in the ballast. If you look closely, you can see the "curb" of the platform on both the "wall" platform, and the island platform.
That had to be one of the funnest stations to wait for a train at...especially in the winter when it got dark early...there was no lighting, just whatever second hand light you got from the street above, which wasn't all that close...
