Well you do have to give credit for the slanted nose for areodynamic purposes, but the pentographs negated that to some degree. It might've been best if it was a 5-car set rahter than the 5 2-car sets. |

With all those parts of the front set in (the door, the windows), the R40S was the least aerodynamic car. All those pockets could catch the air, not shift it aorund the car.P.S.-Pantograph. |

They don't have the charm of the old Redbirds. 2. Their ride is not as exciting. 3. The biggest reason why you dislike the NTT is because they don't have a RFW! Those are arguments that few people are going to agree with you on. |

But Raymond forgot one thing: he didn't take into account the large gap in between units once they were added up! I rode those cars when they were brand new before all those gates were added in front. Joy riders used to sit on those little ledges in between units. Pretty dangerous eh? |

I don't know if they were supposed to be 5 car units or not, but I have no reason to doubt you because I don't know one way or the other. Even if you did have two 5 car units, you would still have the same problem in the middle. Unless they would have been transverse cabs, was the conductor supposed to risk HIS life crossing units to operate the doors on the appropriate side in the middle of the train? Plus, if they were going to be 5 car units, then conductor controls would have been necessary in the #1 cabs. |

Yeah, yeah, I know, I know: Lex is too harsh and Canarsie is too soft. It's all just bias against NTTs.I'm not against all automated announcements. The CTA, for example, implemented them very well, but NYCT has not. Admittedly, that's a problem. But only at 2 stations in the entire system: Franklin and E 180th. And if you listen for announcements, it's not a problem at all. What if you're waiting at a station between Franklin and E 180th and you need to know whether it's a Dyre or a Nereid, or a Flatbush/E 180th/Bowling Green/New Lots/Utica? OTOH, what do you do when a rollsign is set incorrectly? Or worse: A whole train is incorrect! I observed this happen on an A train: It was supposed to drop out at Dyckman, but a dead R44 at 207 forced this train signed as a Lefferts blvd train to go into service to Far Rock. One car even ended up signed as ending at 34/Penn! That wasn't my point. Rollsigns can be set incorrectly, but in their current implementation they're much easier to read than the signs on the NTTs. OTOH, I've seen incorrectly-set signs on the NTTs. I saw a 4 train pull in with the rear 5 cars all reading "LAST STOP" once. And sometimes the illumination for the signs is burnt out, so the sign is unreadable. And for incorrectly-set rollsigns -- you do have a point there, but the situation you described is fairly uncommon. Most of the time, the majority of the cars are set correctly. A solution for the signage issue? Just follow the CTA again -- implement electrically-powered rollsigns that can be changed from the operator's cab. I've never seen an incorrectly-signed CTA train. I've heard people complain that the interiors of the R62/68 are like cans, the R44/46 are too drab and coffin-like, and that the R38 is too dark. This is a matter of personal preference, and while I admit that the existing NTT color scheme is a bit too sterile for my tastes, this does not dertact from its value as a subway car. To be fair, I don't like the interiors of many of the older trains as well. I guess the only ones I really like are the R32, the R40 (sans the seats), the R42, and the R46. The others have their problems such as being too dark, too bright, or too reflective. |
