49th Street-Broadway

In the Nostalgia Thread, 49th Street was brought up, so couldn't resist a few photos there when I got on the Q train today....
The station is showing some wear, but it's still an unusual station. I always liked it.
When I was a kid in the 70's, it was one of the only stations that really looked good, when all the others were filthy, falling apart, and just plain grungy. It was like a shining star back then.
And even today, while it's 1970's stone benches seem to be all gone, and it is a bit "dated" now, it sure looked modern and sharp back then....

Nice. My favorite part of 49th Street is the lighting effects depicted in the last three pictures.

Yes, the lighting is great at that station. It's much nicer than when they just put a row of lights at the edge of the platform. They didn't do it much after 49th, but then started that more recently again in some renovations, putting the lighting in the arches in the ceiling gives a nicer ombience to the stations.

Don't forget Lex-63rd.
I would love to see a line full of stations with the designs of all three, in the 12 colors you would find on an artist's color wheel. The primary colors would be the express stations, with the three secondary or tertiary colors as the locals. (Bowling green represents "red-orange", while the other two are plain orange).

I don't know why they picked 49th, but 49th was part of a test program, of refurbishment, and sound proofing. The station had special panels put in the ceiling to make stations quieter. The walls were considered state of the art. It was a test station, and other stations were supposed to follow. But then the 70's city fiscal crisis hit, and that was the end of that.

Sure. Or you could just call it 49th Street and 7th Avenue, much as the next stop up is referred to as 57th Street and 7th Avenue (or 57-7 for short), and much as a nearby stop on the IRT is referred to as 50th Street and Broadway.

I'd love to, but that photo isn't mine. It's from Lee Stooky's book "Subway Ceramics". It's the first time I ever saw what the mosaics looked like.
There's some at NYC subway.org, but not really of the walls:

Here's a historic one taken at the same location as my current one yesterday.

You can slightly make out the walls across the platform:

If it's like most of the other Broadway stations, then the tiles are behind the bricks. It's not real tile. Like the cement block tile, they places a new wall in front of the old, covering them. The same style of renovation was done at Wall St, Hoyt, 137th, all the Brooklyn 4th Ave line stations, formerly the other Broadway line stations, 51st St, etc.

That's pretty astonishing, since the only staircases to the station in question are along 7th Avenue. Did you build your own new staircase to gain access to the station?

People don't generally say 28th St-Lex, and even if they did, there's no other subway line under Lex at that point to confuse people with.

Again, if the next stop up is commonly referred to as 57th Street and 7th Avenue (or 57-7), why wouldn't you adopt a similar convention at 49th Street and 7th Avenue?

have you ever seen 45th st on 4th ave? the graffiti never really comes off the tiles. mosaics (even simple ones like that) look a million times better than what is essentially colored cinderblocks.

No, not necessarily.

if there is something nice underneath why are you so against it?

Because I'm tired of every single station looking alike.

thats like if someone put some ugly stickers on a rolls royce, why would it be a big deal to take them off and let the real deal show?

Actually, it's not like that. The tile job underneath what's presently there looks just like the rest of the stations with Similar tile mosaics. I'm all for rennovating, and even removing the existing walls. But if this will result in stations that will essentially be replicas of each other (just with different words in the middle of those mosaics), then what's the point.

My point: The Chrysler building looks great. It would loose significance if there were multiple replicas, peppered throughout the city.

the chrysler building does look great.

but i don't think they should keep the port authority bus terminal around because even though its wrecthed looking it is "different".

PABT serves a different purpose. It may look strange (I wouldn't say ugly), but it can't be compared to most other NYC buildings.
