Tuscarora Almanac for September 5 |
|
Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Thu Sep 5 07:45:23 2024 Tuscarora Almanac for September 5 1885 – from The Book of First Runs The Lexington Avenue El is extended from Gates Avenue to Alabama Avenue. 1937 – from The Book of Service Changes New schedules are put into effect on September 5, 1937 cutting the length of Sunday Broadway-7th Avenue Expresses (today’s Rt. 1) from ten to seven cars. Previously Sunday morning express trains had been cut at Eastern Parkway-Brooklyn Museum with half the train going to New Lots Avenue and the other half to Flatbush Avenue. The reduction in train length means that this will no longer be possible so trains will alternate between the two terminals. 1961 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day of operation of the BMT Multis. There were twenty five of these five - section articulated units. Ten (7004-7013) were built by the Saint Louis Car Company. Fifteen (7014-7028) were built by the Pullman – Standard Car Manufacturing Company. They had been the regular equipment for the #13 14 Street - Fulton St Express until 1956. After that they were assigned to the # 10 Myrtle Av - Chambers St Line. Units 7021 and 7022 made the final run. 1970 – from The Book of Strange and Unusual Occurrences R-16 6382 was coupled onto the end of a train of IRT cars running up the ramp from the IND Concourse Yard on the IRT Jerome Avenue Line. There was some damage to the station platform and a signal was knocked over. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

And on this date in 1980, I took my last trip to the city before heading out west to Colorado. Saw an R-10 Ethel train at World Trade Center station and an R-46 CC. Four years would pass before I would be back in New York, at that time a record time span for me. It has since been eclipsed; I haven't been to New York since 2019. |

From a distance all of the postwar IRT series cars look like BMT post war cars. Also a thought to consider that in those days yardmasters (or anyone else for that matter) were not subject to random testing, if you get my drift. |

I believe the last set(built by Clark) looks modern enough, and BOT/TA enough to have been massed produced. The second (Green Hornet) fits the future narrative for the 75ft cars with tapered sidewalls. The first looks suited for its time, since that "ogee" roofline look was popular (every railcar built,up until 1950 R15s). |

Also on this date in 1967, I rode at the RFW for the frst time, on a old timer D from 47-50th to 59th. It took some time before I started riding up front full time, but the view was great. Then at 59th, we switched to the s/b platform and were supposed to hop an Abbott back to 42nd St. Now, I didn't KNOW then that that train with the racing stripe scheme that was sitting on the express track was an A. I didn't know about the roofline side signs on the R-10s. We let it go, and as the last car went by, I saw the big A above the storm door and said out loud, "What luck! THAT was an A train!" A CC pulled in and we took it instead. It was my first ride on a CC, and I have my sign box signed appropriately for the occasion. Since CC trains terminated at Hudson Terminal in those days, my lower destination sign is set for Hudson Terminal. |

Whole cars were not preserved but parts of some of them were. There are 2 WH and one GE controller and 2 ME39 brake valves from the Multis preserved and sitting in my living room. One WH controller and 1 ME39 brake valve are from Multi 7011 which was in the consist of the last 14th/Fulton train to arrive at Lefferts on the last day of BMT service. Another railfan now living in San Fransisco has, or at least had, one of the mechanical sign boxes that was used to display the side signs on thr Multi units. |
