I seem to recall that by the mid-70s, the R-15s (as well as the R-12 and R-14) were no longer being used as lead motors. Not sure when this took place, as I was living in Illinois from July 1971-June 1974 and was only in NYC on limited occasions. I do recall riding a 2 train to Newlots with an R-12 or R-14 as lead (south) motor. |

They were common as lead motors until the 80s when they retired. I used to look down the tracks on the platform and when I saw the wide space between the headlamps, I knew a 12 or 14 was leading. |

The last E train made up of Arnines for me was 1976, out in the Rockaways running the shuttle. The CC was the actual last run of Arnines along IND tracks. Every so often, I would see Arnines on the F up unto the R46s showed up. |

I would get them as lead motors on the 2 and 3 once in a while. For the longest time, I was under the impresssion that they had pneumatic door engines because of the trigger boxes and had been modified, but found out much later that they had electric door engines. |

In the last half of 1976 I was the AM dispatcher at Church Ave and the GG had just about anything that would run, R-1/9s, R-16s and R-38. No R-40s, 42s 44s or 46s though. |

I attended John Dewey HS for the 1974-75 school year. As some of you know, JDHS is adjacent to Coney Island Yard, as well as the West End and Sea Beach lines (great school for a subway fan. I always hoped I would be in an odd-numbered room, which were on the perimeter of the school, you'd always have a view of either the West End, the Sea Beach, the yard, or even the yard lead from the west end. Even-numbered rooms, you only see a boring-ass courtyard 😐) At the south end, there were 8 layup tracks (not sure if this was STillwell Yard, or something else. 2 tracks each for the four lines that served Stillwell (Brighton, Culver, Sea Beach and West End) and they were arranged in the same order as the terminal (E-W, Sea Beach, Brighton, Culver and West End) I would go out during a free period to check out the trains (midday, when all the rush hour extras were in) and every once in awhile, an Arnine would be on one of the tracks allocated to the F. Actually, there was a pretty good variety: Arnines, R-38, R-40 (Slant only, the Modifieds generally only worked the EE or GG, although I'm sure they would occasionally pop up on the F), also every once in awhile R-44 (R-46 weren't really in service yet). Never saw an R-16, again they were mainly on the EE or GG, but I'm sure they may have turned up on the F once in awhile. |

I'm not sure, as back then, I didn't know that the R-40M (4450-4549) and R-42 (4550-4949) were different classes (not knowing any of the contract numbers (no internet back then), I had lumped the 40M and 42 into a class that I called "A/C" (for obvious reasons, although I did that before I knew that R40S 4350-4449 were also air conditioned)What I remember (just the 42s) was: 4550-4599: N 4600-4697?: AA , B 4698-480?: D (and maybe also CC). I'm not sure about the rest. Pretty sure the 4900s were on the LL, lower 4800s may have been on the RR, higher 4800s on the J or M. Again, some of these may be incorrect, if they are, don't get excited about it, it has been 47 years. |

The French Connection cars 4572-4573 were normally assigned there. If you recall they operated in the movie with N signs being displayed instead of B signs. |

Yes (I wrote the N in yellow, since that was the color of the line back when the R-42s made their debut), but unfortunately it's hard to see, so it may look like I left it blank) |

Yeah, and the affront was addressed when the MTA made the Q the 24 hour service again, instead of 6th avenue. The West End benefited the most out of the service changes because it received 24hr service again into the heart of the city using the 6th Avenue D line. The One line that has Not changed over the years, which Could use it,is the Sea Beach. Even the 4th Ave local Should be changed from the R to another route to improve it's throughput. |

When the EE and KK were eliminated and adjustments made to other lines including cessation of F exp service N/O Church Ave, for the next month or so, the lowest numbered R-1/9s were laid up in the S/B exp tk N/O Church Ave. Every day a few trains of those cars would depart for Coney Island Yd for scrapping. |
