Well,it seems that they didn't feel this way when they purchased the R62s from Kawasaki Heavy. The cars were built in Japan, the 68s were built in France, the 62a were built in Canada. Foreign meaning rolling stock from other cities. Bill Newkirk |

They didn't call 'em BMT standards for nothing.:) They set a standard for subway rolling stock.Technically should they be called BRT Standards ? Bill Newkirk |

By the time the SIRT cars were developed, the electric portions on the H drawheads were changed from the older “slide” which had to be manually advanced from the uncoupling valve to a different style of electric portion that advances automatically as soon as the coupling was made. The SIRTs would actually be able to couple to the D types and the R-1/9s. |

Although I’m not entirely certain, but I believe that since the Broad St Subway unlike the bMT was actually designed for 67 ft cars, the trucks are closer to the ends of the cars eliminating the end excess and allowing passengers to cross between cars which could not be done on the BMT steels. |

I’ve been railfanning since the 1950s and in all that time I have never heard any NYCTA (former BMT) employee referring to those cars as “standards” In the Southern Div they were referred to as “ABs” to distinguish them from the D types adn in the Eastern Division they were referred to simply as “steels” since they were the only heavyweight steel car used on the Eastern till the R types came along. I suspect that prior to their unitization into B units and the arrival of the D types, Southern Div personnel also simply called them “steels” also. The only people whom I have ever heard calling them “standards” are railfans. |

I just read on Wiki that the Cs ran briefly on Franklin when they were brand new. I’m actually surprised that the Cs weren’t transferred to Fkln after Fulton shutdown since they would have been prefect for that service. The ywould have even been OK for the times when Fkln ran through to Stl. |

Please note some cars have channeling above the doors to deflect rain water. Some cars show varying air vents along the roof line. There is also a variety of front ends. |

The top one is one of the original Broad Street cars; the lower one is a South Broad car, with the end of a Bridge car showing on the right. The original cars had windows in the door pockets (some plated over), but the South Broad cars had a blank panel on one side. I forget what the Bridge cars had. |

They looked as though they were from another century (they are now; this was back in 1967). I'd gotten used to looking above the front storm door and seeing route and destination signs - and these ugly things didn't have them! |

I've read that BRT personnel initially called them, "steel cars," which makes sense since everything up until then was wooden. Then when they started coupling single cars into three-car sets, the lashup became known as a B unit while single cars became A units; hence ABs. I'm a railfan myself and like to refer to them as BMT standards. Others prefer, "steels," or ABs. We all know what were'e talking about. |

The "South Broad" cars were bought for the extension of the Broad Street subway, to provide additional service. They, and the original cars, ran the length of the line. The Bridge cars were owned by/financed by? - I don't know the details - the Delaware River Port Authority, to serve the line to Camden. After being replaced by the PATCO cars, they were assigned to subway service, running with the Broad Street and South Broad cars. |
