I’ve been railfanning since the 1950s and in all that time I have never heard any NYCTA (former BMT) employee referring to those cars as “standards” In the Southern Div they were referred to as “ABs” to distinguish them from the D types adn in the Eastern Division they were referred to simply as “steels” since they were the only heavyweight steel car used on the Eastern till the R types came along. I suspect that prior to their unitization into B units and the arrival of the D types, Southern Div personnel also simply called them “steels” also. The only people whom I have ever heard calling them “standards” are railfans. |
