I've read that BRT personnel initially called them, "steel cars," which makes sense since everything up until then was wooden. Then when they started coupling single cars into three-car sets, the lashup became known as a B unit while single cars became A units; hence ABs. I'm a railfan myself and like to refer to them as BMT standards. Others prefer, "steels," or ABs. We all know what were'e talking about.
