The R-46's rode like a dream with the original Rockwell trucks. The came the Rockwell HPT-2 truck fiasco and their SMEE truck replacements made for a harsher yet harder ride. Bill Newkirk |

When I was a kid, after school I'd go down the the Woodside Sta & watch all the different diesel & electric trains, all mixed up, looking and sounding great.A train lovers smorgasbord! No more. It went from that to the sterile looking M1s & M3s now on to M7s & M9 and the C-3 bilevels with their 43 diesel electric and dual mode locomotives. No variety. A very boring show. |

Aside from the truck issues, much better cars after they took out the consistently failing P-Wire System....and as it turned out, according to a TSS I was taking to one night, the problem was poor maintenance. Not taking care of the batteries. For the crews the cabs were much roomier than the R44's. And for the t/o (both pre and post P-Wire, very easy and fun to operate with the controller right in the middle. I would operate with either hand. |

You condemn the NYCT’s “cookie cutter”fleet yet in the early days of the BRT, and IRT most of the cars were close enough to each other in appearance that to the average passenger, they were the same type of car. While it is true that the various contracts of BMT steels had a few minor differences like roofs and signs, they were still basically a single type of car and remained so till the D types came along. As for the IRT even taking into consideration the deck roof Hi-Vs and the small group of World’s fair Steinways, almost all the IRT cars looked alike to the average person. The same or even more so of the IND which had almost completely identical cars from the R-1s through the R-9s and kept that same appearance till the R-10s came in after WWII. |

Awesome set of photos!!I heard (on this board, but I can't remember who posted it) years ago that the extra track on the Culver Viaduct was intended for a freight connection, and that at some point further down the line, they intended to make a connection to the SBK or LIRR. But that connection was never made, and the extra track was rarely used at all, and never for the purpose intended. It was eliminated in the viaduct rebuilt around 2010. |

Awesome set of photos!!Thanks Mr. Main I heard (on this board, but I can't remember who posted it) years ago that the extra track on the Culver Viaduct was intended for a freight connection, and that at some point further down the line, they intended to make a connection to the SBK or LIRR.
