The 2010 service cuts were to save money, which means fewer trains and therefore a higher spare factor. If they reduce the spare factor to what it was before the service cuts, they would need only four additional train sets to extend the Q to 96/2 at the same frequency they had in 2010. |

The last of the R160's went into service just before the 2010 service cuts. By then, all the older cars they had replaced were gone. They had enough new cars to completely fill out the N,the Q and the W, except possibly for a handful of R68's or R68A's which are still running. None of the R160's has been retired. |

The R32's were kept to make up for the R44's early retirement. The 32's and the 42's run on the C and the J/Z in 8 car sets. This (and the 8 car R160 sets) has nothing to do with the N, Q or W. |

Not all of them.222 R32s remain, 50 R42s remain, for a total of 272 cars, which is exactly how many R44s were intended to be kept. However, when you account for the fact that 272 R44s makes the same number of trains as 340 R32/R42s, there is a not insubstantial loss! |

It will require the same number of train sets as now. |

Yes, they probably were hoping they could run full length (600 ft trains) on the C but they couldn't so they had to settle for 480 ft trains. If they plan to increase C service they're going to have to increase the utilzation factor of the remaining R32's. I agree if there is a further delay in the R179 order it could cause a car shortage when the SAS "stubway" opens. |

That saves 24 minutes - enough for a substantial reduction in the number of W trains needed. On the other hand if they plan to increase Q service when SAS opens there could be a definite equipment shortage. A lot also depends on the utilization factor. I think at the present about 15% of the NTT cars are out for maintenance, inspection etc. If that could be reduced it would help. |

How many trains per hour through each tunnel did they operate ?They operated 29 tph through Montague St in 1954 and 30 tph in 1949. The corresponding figures for 60th St are before the 11th St Cut became operational. They ran 18 and 19 tph from Astoria. If it's assumed that that Astoria service was not reduced, then the service level would have been 29 tph immediately after BMT service from Forest Hills was introduced. How much degradation to capacity did eliminating key-by do ? None. |

Even though no official info has come out, here's what I think how this service restoration is gonna go down. The (W) will run it's usual Astoria-Whitehall route, but on rush hours runs to Coney Island via Sea Beach. It would most likely run local under 4th Avenue. It may also run on weekends or late nights between 57th Street-Whitehall Street (since in recent months there's been an increase in late night ridership. For the cars, it would mainly get the R68's and R160's, the exact type of fleet it was before the 2010 discontinuation. I would say in the long run it would get the R179's and R211's. For the (Q) overall, I think it would get more R68/R68A's or maybe even a R46 (but I doubt this ever gonna happen). Anyways, that's just my thoughts on this. |

There would be no reason to have a completely new route to CI via the sea Beach. The only reason for an additional service to Astoria would be to handle rush hour crowds that the N can’t handle on its own. Otherwise the W really only needs to be a M - F rush hour only service. If it should happen that ridership can be handles by adding an extra N or two in the rush rather than reestablishing an entirely new line, then that’s what will likely be done. |

Not only that but before platform doors are considered, all cars on the respective divisions have to be exactly the same dimensions which means that perform doors cannot be considered until the very last 75 ft car is permanently removed from service. It’s interesting that there are people who are pressing to have the NYCTS install platform doors, yet I haven’t heard any pressure for the other major transit systems in the US to do the same even though the newer systems like DC, Baltimore, Atlanta, Bart and LA could probably have done so from their beginnings. |

If you're going to run the (W) late nights and NOT run it to Astroia, I would run it to 96th/2nd to supplement the (Q) when not running to Astoria in this setup. Given the dense population of the upper east side, it likely would be warranted (same reason why I would consider if you can't have the (M) run to 71-Continental during CBTC work on weekends running it to 96th/2nd then and late nights once the SAS opens). |

Is this one of those times when something appears to be a good idea, but is really a boon-doggle in disguise, because it is really about making a huge amount of money for a company somewhere?Given the huge variety of "subway stations" - underground, elevated, on the ground, as well as the different configurations of stations, etc. ------------ First they came for the close end-doors, and I said nothing. Then they came for the token and subway clerks, and I said nothing. Then they killed various subway routes, and I said nothing. Next they came for the rail-fan window, and I said nothing. It seems that they won't stop until subway riders travel about in computer controlled hermetically sealed tubes that must show constant advertising glued to our eye-balls as on of the prices for transit. Re: W train returning when Phase I of the 2nd Av subway opens in December 2016?. |

Operatins planning will send out its staff of traffic checkers to assess the ridership volume and then forward the results to scheduling for appropriate action. If ridership warrants, then the W could be resurrected. The way you are describing it, it seems that Astoria ridership is approaching levels of Qns Blvd and as high as Astoria ridership make have gotten, I find it hard to believe that it is anywhere near Qns Blvd levels. Also, where is the ridership coming from. I don’t recall seeing any major building taking place along that corridor since the time when 8 car trains of 60 footers operated there so I don’t understand why 600 ft trains with a decreased headway couldn’t handle the loads. |

So the same population is accompanied by a rise in subway usage. |

Re: W to Astoria/N and Q to 96th Street? |

And I remember those days when the (RR) handled Astoria as you mentioned just fine (early 1980s).What I believe happened with Astoria was you had a major change in the kind of population there just since 1990, especially as Manhattan became more and more expensive and those who replaced those who were there in the '80s are much more transit-savvy and not afraid to ride the trains. That's why one thing I would consider is this: (W) runs from 9th Avenue (possibly even extended to Bay Parkway or Coney Island via West End rush hours) to Astoria at all times, running rush hours as many trains as can fit after the regularly scheduled run of (R) trains through Montauge and 60th Street. Both the (R) and (W) would be local. (N) and (Q) both run at all times to 96th Street/2nd Avenue with if needed a limited number of trains during rush-hours short-turned at 57th Street. This would be express at all times except possibly late nights. Having both the (N) and (Q) go to 96th/2nd would likely really make the SAS attractive since then it would really take pressure off the (6). |

I commute to work on the Astoria line, and I can say from personal observation that trains are EXTREMELY crowded during the rush hours. |

From my days of working out of Astoria as a C/R. M/M and T/D the Astoria passengers were always white collar workers heading for midtown. |
