Nice photos, but they raised a question I hadn't considered before.

How are trains stored in the Transit Museum? I don't recall hearing the compressors run the last time I was there, so I'm assuming they're hand braked. But it's my understanding that a handbrake cannot be trusted to hold a train over a very long time, so are there chocks or some other means of securing the trains should the handbrakes release? And I'd assume the third rail is live throughout the station, as opposed to using an shop jumper to run the lights and stuff?

You did alright boss. Way to go.

I never thought I'd see the day that a 75 footer would take a spot in the Museum Collection.

Coupling the cars iron to iron is good. You'll never know when a tow job will have to be done!

the plaque in the 5th pic says that these cars were rebuilt by morrison-knudsen in 1991. the r44s were actually rebuilt between June 1991 – January 1993. 5202-5341 were rebuilt by morrison-knudsen, the other cars were rebuilt by the 207 street overhaul shop and coney island overhaul shop.

As far as I am able to answer, the end of each train is secured by a chock on one rail right against one wheel. And the third rail is live.

From my perspective, this is my answer:

Almost all of the cars in the museum have their hand brakes on.
If you look at the R-44, you could tell the hand brake is on from looking inside the cab.
If you board one of the BMT Elevated Cars and look at the front of 9306, you can clearly see the hand brake applied. (Refer to the top arrow in the picture.)
If you look at the R7A 1575 (with the Signal Tower behind you), you can see something similar. For 100 and 484, their hand brake is physically inside the car.

The second arrow points to one yellow 'chock' which is put on the wheel closest to the platform to make sure those trains do not move.

Hand brakes will hold cars indefinitely, providing they were tested for function before abandoning the equipment. I remember the diesel crews back in the 80s having to shake the trains and car inspectors beating brake shoes with hammers to get them released from the wheels after taking off those handbrakes on scrapped R10s and that IND flat car at CCY. Their cast iron brake shoes stuck to the wheels from handbrakes being on for LONG periods of time after they were removed from service.

Hmmm which reminds me. This was brought to my attention earlier today. Perhaps you saw this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R44_(New_York_City_Subway_car)

"Cars (5286–5289) still remain as of September 2013 and are probably going to be scrapped. Car 5240-5241, however have been set aside from scrapping and are held for the New York Transit Museum."

Given it's Wikipedia, that info probably shouldn't be trusted unless someone in the know can confirm this. Who writes these things anyway?

As far as I know, all the R44s, minus 5240 and the 63 SIR units, are gone.

So that unit was probably a regular on the 'A' line. I'm just guessing.

My remembering of the R44s in the 70s was the lowest numbered units (100 thru about 120) were on the 'E' and 'F' lines.
