Hand brakes will hold cars indefinitely, providing they were tested for function before abandoning the equipment. I remember the diesel crews back in the 80s having to shake the trains and car inspectors beating brake shoes with hammers to get them released from the wheels after taking off those handbrakes on scrapped R10s and that IND flat car at CCY. Their cast iron brake shoes stuck to the wheels from handbrakes being on for LONG periods of time after they were removed from service. |
