Seinfeld Subway Episode

It may have appeared here before, but I do not remember it. I just saw the Seinfeld subway episode for the nth time and wonder where many of the scenes were filmed. I know almost all of the subway car signs were inconsistent with the alleged routes the four actors were taking.

It was a set. Most west coast shows that supposedly take place in NYC used staged subway sets. CSI: NY did that all the time, though I think someone who worked on this particular episode was a closet railfan:

76th was WAY further back. I am aware of absolutely zero pictures of it, but back when I worked for the teeyay, it was still shown on the model board at Euclid and I talked to fellow trainmen that had been back there. At the time, there would be no reason whatsoever to be bullshitting anybody about it.

Well ... they certainly backfilled the yard leads to it, and I was told that the entire tunnel got filled back in once they decided they weren't going to use it. That's about all I know other than the descriptions of empty trackbed, somewhat tiled southbound side and the northbound side wasn't even completely poured.

When the NYC BOT was planning to extend the "A" train past Euclid, wasn't 76th St. originally going to be the next station?
But abruptly, after the 1950 LIRR Rockaway Branch trestle fire, it was decided that the NYC BOT would acquire and operate the line. It was decided to connect the "A" train from Euclid to the LIRR Rockaway Branch.
A revised route had to be planned quickly to connect to the Fulton St. El rather than build an extensive subway extension.
Isn't that's why even though 76th was being built, because route plans changed, the future 76th St.station was abandoned?

I've heard many conflicting stories about that including that, non-union diggers and a coverup, as well as "screw it, we'll just use the BMT" ... honestly don't know WHY they did it, all I know is that too many people who didn't have any reason to screw around all said it was out there.

The ONE thing everybody did agree on was that there WAS a partially built station there with little else other than the tunnel, empty trackbeds and little else down there.

I'm glad that you mentioned Pitkin because in all the time I was out there as a trainmaster I never thought to check Pitkin's board even though I knew about Euclid. There was also a portion of a Lexington Av subway in Manhattan that was built from about 26 St to 38 St or thereabouts for possible BMT use that was filled in when it became definite that the IRT would get the upper portion of Lex but nobody seems to start any flame wars over that. I have often suspected and have mentioned it in several posts that the reason that there is more mystery surrounding 76 St station than the Kennedy assaination has to do with the corruption in the city government at the time that portion of the subway was built and that there may be some aspect of that construction that the politicians of the day wanted to keep hidden and it still being perpetuated to this day.

Something went on with the A7 and A8 yd leads but I can't say for sure if it was a backfill or not. When I first went in there in 1962, the rails and signals were still in although the switches had been removed and the tunnels ended in mounds of earth although I don't recall seeing any bumping blocks. IND old timers told me that Pitkin Yd used to make drill moves into those tracks so they must have at one time expended past what I saw. When I returned in 1983, there were cider block walls at the ends of the tunnels. THAT is where the cinderblock walls are and NOT at the end of the Fulton St portion under Pitkin Av.
