It could only be run as the first car on fantrips if they take them off (although prehaps that's where it always should be. On the other hand, for 99% of their active lives they look like they do now with the gates, etc, so maybe they should stay that way.Let's hope they save at least one! |

That's why I was hoping they would make that an R42-R40 pair instead. I would rather see a slant saved than a R40M saved. They can't save everything.And to save a married pair of the same car (ie, two R42s or two R40's) is silly, as you only need one of each car to be saved. They are not going to save set of each, because they are not going to want 6 cars hanging around. The mueseum really only needs one of each, and the chances of them keeping one of each class is slim, so if one must be sacrificed, I would rather see the R40M be the one not saved. |

The museum does have a single R30, but that means it cannot be operated by itself. Now that the mass of retiring cars are not single units, it's going to mean a more static museum display. Couldn't they couple the R30 up with the R16 or something to make it run? I guess my hope for riding an R30 or an R16 again is sort of crushed, because now that the centenial is over, it appears the MTA has lost much of it's interest in the museum once again. If they didn't run last year, it will never run again, at least not in the near future.And you are absolutely correct, it perhaps will mean "static display", however, I can see them marrying different classes into married pairs. it's the only way to save two different classes, operable, and not have overkill by having to save two of certain classes, which is sort of redundant, especially in a world of limitted funds for maintenence, or capacity to keep them. The R44's will be a tough one. I can't see them saving more than one, and at the same time, they need to be paired, although can't be paired with the 60 foot cars. Personally, I think they will ljust completely scrap the R44 class without saving any. After all, they look almost identical to the R46's, especially in laymen's terms, and the R46's will still be running. They will probably wait to save one till when the R46's are scrapped, and save one of them. Perhaps by that time, they can attach the remaining R46 to an R68, and just save it that way in the future. |

Brooklyn el cars were higher than subway cars, typically 13'6" or so, so there were certain subway lines the Q's couldn't run on, complicating moves between the Eastern Division and Coney Island shops. |

Whether you like the car or not, it is unique to the fleet, visibly so, and was designed by a famous design team. Take an R40 pair and an R40M pair, split them up and marry them to each other. That way you can remove the pantograph gates and still have a train. It would make a great fantrip train (a bullet train, essentially) until the next car class has to be made room for, at which time one of the two pairs would be scrapped. The other would be retained. |

EXACTLY as delivered, before the relality of safely operating in regular service crept in. Raymond Lowy designed a very good looking car and this effort should be what gets put in the TM. Problem is, the buckage needed to restore the car back to its original condition may kill this idea. Perhaps Shore Line can acquire one with the goal of restoring it to like-new condition, alothough it will take an eon for them to do, with their huge backlog of car restorations. |

The gate cars were a compromise. They still retain Q-type aspects. What I don't see happening is an R40 with a restored interior (fans, blue seats, checkered floor, rubber sealed doors, old single roll signs, etc). I'd love it, especially if it could be mechanically restored to pre-GOH specs. I miss that distinctive Darth Vader sounding airbrake that the R40 and R42's had. |

I miss them too. :( When I read about the GOH and heard that the original braking system had been replaced (w/ one from New York Air Brake), I knew that was the end of the Vader brakes, which was confirmed upon my next visit to NYC. What was also cool with the Vader brakes, when the T/O would dump, instead of the CHA! sound you'd get with the older SMEEs, it would sound like the train was sneezing :) |

The only reason I'm fairly sure that the 38s had them as b/c I was a student at John Dewey HS during the 1974-75 school year, and in the fall of 74, 3950-3999 (minus 3990/1, which had already been lost in a accident a few years earlier) were assigned to the N, and I used to hear the DV brakes as a s/b N train would pass by coming from 86 St (the athletic field at JDHS goes right up to the Sea Beach ROW). But that was 30 years ago, maybe my memory isn't 100% accurate. |
