I miss that distinctive Darth Vader sounding airbrake that the R40 and R42's had.I think the 38s had them also, but I could be mistaken about that. I miss them too. :( When I read about the GOH and heard that the original braking system had been replaced (w/ one from New York Air Brake), I knew that was the end of the Vader brakes, which was confirmed upon my next visit to NYC. What was also cool with the Vader brakes, when the T/O would dump, instead of the CHA! sound you'd get with the older SMEEs, it would sound like the train was sneezing :) |
