Some more progress on the R38 that I am working on...

I'm almost done, just need to code some 3D headlights, fix a couple textures issues, and make the window frames look nicer. As always, expect a release on bvestation.com

Check out the preview video:

I like this but make on slight alteration.

In the cab between Parkside and Church: have the black needle (brake pipe) at the 110 lb. mark and use the red (straight air) needle to stop the train.

I guess my big question is why R38s?

A few nitpick points. You would never see the sun rise or set in the south. You left out the E in Beverley on your note at the bottom. And the interior signs need to be corrected.

Can't wait to see the whole thing when it's done. Great work.

The sun issue will be brought up to the route developer.

With regards to the rollsigns:
Those signs are actually animated. By pressing the 0, 8, and 9 buttons, you can scroll through rollsign and flipdot readings to sign up your train correctly.

This functionality is driven by a plugin, which, unfortunately only works on windows machines.

On Mac and Linux computers, the lack of plugin functionality makes the rollsigns a bit messed up. But on windows, they work fine.

Actually, that problem is with the person who did the coding for OpenBVE. She abandoned the project and our guys here are trying to maintain it. The problem is that BVE (and OpenBVE) are written in Microsoft "dotNET" and other Microsoft stuff. The EMULATION for dotNET on other platforms is shaky at best. Linux, OSX and even our KNOS product end up having to run it on MONO and VALA libraries instead of Microsoft's and both of those are incomplete owing to patent issues.

But OpenBVE was somebody's hobby activity and is as good as it gets unless there's resources available to pick up the ball and run with it some more. I wanted to include it in our KNOS OS, but the amount of work required to finish it for such a small audience is prohibitive.

I was talking about the BVE audience in particular. The original author, "Mackoy" in Japan had a fairly decent audience in the early years when it was for Windows ONLY. After he got out of school, that audience (even in Japan) was no longer worth his time and effort. What's happening here is that OpenBVE took his original (abandoned) code and attempted to "port" it to Microsoft dotNET rather than something a bit more open (like OpenGL) as its "code engine." Had they gone with OpenGL, it could have been easily ported anywhere, particularly if the scripting for it were something like Python. So on a purely technical basis, along with patent issues, porting the software to Linux and Mac with the Microsoft-based original code has some serious limitations.

Microsoft dotNET isn't licensed for Linux or OSX. There's a substitute thing called "MONO libraries" which emulate the Microsoft stuff within certain limits. It also needs VALA and some other libraries in order to work but without Microsoft's "DirectX" which Microsoft won't license, there's problems.

Mac users can install Parallels which emulates Windows by installing Windows onto a Mac (with all the security issues) whereupon the Windows version can be run. For Unix, there's WINE which emulates Windows and can run the Windows version. But again, because of DirectX running only on native Windows, there's limitations there too. It won't run as well as on Windows because of all this.

So the "small" of a limited number of train buffs, coupled with the limitations of the libraries on other platforms, makes for a very small number indeed despite the likes of us. :)

That's where I was going.

Actually, we'd LOVE to import OpenBVE for KNOS, but the Linux MONO libraries are a mess in Linux, therefore until they get their stuff working, no point in bringing it over here so far. The MONO libraries are also used for OSX and they've been problematic over there too. Microsoft did some squirrely stuff that's hard to reproduce elsewhere.

It's been more than a year since I last chatted with Michelle (she was the maintainer and is no longer doing it) and begged her to move from the old dotNET/Mono code to OpenGL, but Microsoft has never supported OpenGL very well over the years as she explained and well ... Microsquish still is the 500 pound gorilla. :(

To be honest, some major improvements have happened regarding Mac and Linux functionality.

There are now automated installers for both OS's, and Mono functionality has increased to a point where operation on Mac/Linux is nearly identical to that of Windows, except for the lack of support for windows-only plugins (which are being phased out).

Keep in mind that OpenBVE is being made for free by a small group of people. They don't have the level of resources and time that payware developers have, yet they still manage to put out a very respectable simulator.

Yep ... WINE comes with KNOS ... it isn't so much WINE that's a problem with OpenBVE, it's the MONO libraries and trying to get the "DirectX" substitute going ... therein lies the rub. :(

And yes, MUNDO cool! OpenBVE runs rings around the original. Be sure to get the newest WINE package that'll run on your toy though - Mono has sharp enough edges, which is why WINE has been spitting out so many versions lately.

Wine is for running "native winblows" stuff and of course eats mono in order to emulate the dotNot stuff - our world is based on BSD and depends on any Linux code to be portable enough to compile in BSD. In recent years, Linux devs have written code so poorly, it isn't even portable across different Linux distros, much less other 'nixes.

It's been about a year now since the last time I tried to compile the sources for OpenBVE (we're in the process of a new 9.1 version of KNOS) and it was major fail. The problem with Mono in general is that because it emulates Microsoft, it also brings along many of the high stupids of poor security with it, and since KNOS is military-grade secure, we can't allow any of that. This is the reason why I have pushed Michelle so hard in the past to drop that stuff and use OpenGL which doesn't require hooks into the kernel itself.

Once we have 9.1 fully built though, I'll give it a try. But that's the reason why I'm so down on all that Mono stuff ...

That's okay. I've been on plenty of trains when the conductor shuts the doors too quickly and all you hear is "Stand clear of the closing"
