To be honest, some major improvements have happened regarding Mac and Linux functionality.

There are now automated installers for both OS's, and Mono functionality has increased to a point where operation on Mac/Linux is nearly identical to that of Windows, except for the lack of support for windows-only plugins (which are being phased out).

Keep in mind that OpenBVE is being made for free by a small group of people. They don't have the level of resources and time that payware developers have, yet they still manage to put out a very respectable simulator.
