The BMT steels, D types and Multis were originally milk chocolate brown and sometime in the late 1930s it seems that they were painted a sort of dark khaki color. |

Actually, as far as yard assignments, they were assigned to ENY Yd which had the responsibility for inspection and maintenance. If a train on any of the Eastern Division lines went bad in its own yd, it would be sent to ENY Yd for a replacement. Actually, the only line in the Eastern that did not have its own layup yard was the Jamaica Line so J Line layups and put ins are made from/to ENY Yd and prior the 1956, the Fulton St el lacked its own yard and had to use ENY Yd for its layups also although Fulton had a middle track for layups which the Jamaica Line lacks. |

When the Chrystie reroutes first went in effect, the Jamaica line ran between Jamaica and Brighton Beach ad the Brighton local and the Ds ran as Brighton expresses till the locals stopped running, Since the D ran to Stl full time, this presented Xover problems N/O BBC. Back to the Jamaica Line, the Jamaica/Brighton service was called "QJ" and terse were certain jamaica intervals that operated between Jamaica and 95 St which carried the designation "RJ" and operated only during the rush hours. Both rush hour Bway Bkln lcls and Jamaica trains operating to Broad St after QJs stopped running daily and on weekends carried the designation "JJ." When 57/6 opened, the JJ was eliminated entirely and Bway Bkln lcl service was provided by rush hour KKs operating between Jamaica and 57/6 with some putins and layups originating and terminating at E/Pky, Atlantic and Canarsie. Qjs were extended to Stl when they operated on the Brighton Line and Ds were terminated at BBC when they operate express and ran to Stl, when they ran lcl on the Brighton. At the same time, RJs were eliminated and selected RR rush hour specials operated between 95 St and Chambers St where they laid up midday with some RRs also being laid up N/O Chambers overnight. Although the Chambers St specials carried "RR" route signs, employes in the field continued to refer to them as "RJ Specials." Jamaica trains were removed from the Brighton Line circa 1972 and replaced by Ms, the Jamaica service was simply changed to "J." |

I recall seeing a three car train of repainted BRT A/B types holding on track A3 at the IND 23rd Street station one night as I got off a R40 inbound from queens. First time that I ever saw a BRT A/B type on the IND main line outside of the Q/B line. |

I think you missed a couple of stages. The JJ, RJ, NX, etc. lasted for a little while after Chrystie St. At one point, 4 lines called 168 St-Jamaica a terminal. As for QJ, it lasted until '76 or '77, when the big shakeup which got rid of the EE, shifted the M to Coney Island via Brighton, and the N to 71-Continental, happened. I believe that's when they also got rid of the last of the R-9's. |

By the time the MTA interior paint scheme was developed most of the BMT steels were gone and there certainly weren't enough single A cars left to paint in that scheme. I worked the BMT Eastern in the last years of the steels and non were painted in the R-9 paint scheme. Other than the 2390/91/92 unit which was restored to its original pre unification paint scheme, the remaining steels were painted in a speckled green interior scheme similar to the last 10 IRT R-22 cars. |

You probably could, but in the case of that R-40, it just happened to be the train that was on the stand at the time so I took it. A few months later, I was working the QJ and although the line was mostly R-27/30s, the interval behind mine was an R-9 and I couldn't get another M/M to swap with me which was surprising since most of the newbies at that time, except for Big Ed, preferred SMEEs to R-9s. |
